almost anything in 6 or 6.5mm can be made competitive. not a lot of guys running 223 but there are some and it needs to really be cooking near 3200fps with heavy for cal. bullets or you’re at a disadvantage on long shots.

as someone in their first season of national events, i can tell you the caliber choice isn’t what is going to be holding you back on your misses.

there is no go to gun, in open class nearly everyone runs something custom

No and No.

Just show up and shoot! The most popular is still the 6.5, though most of the top competitors are running 6mm. Last year's winner was loading 6.5x47 on a Dillon 550. The game/sport is about practice and repetition.

PRS blog is just the top 100 guys (all sponsored). Not a good measure.

224 Valkyrie was designed for the AR platform. It's more hype than anything at this point. .223 (.223ai) would be fun for local matches as it's cheap, easy and will help you learn to read wind. Most local matches are also closer distances. <1000y

Yeah I primarily shoot the 6x47 and 6 Dasher, others I see are shooting the 6XC and 6.5x47. Not many Crapmoors in this area. I have been practicing a lot with my 223 lately just due to the much cheaper ammo. If the wind isn’t blowing and the shots are not out past 800 then the 223 will hold its own. The lighter recoil allows for faster follow up shots because your not bouncing around the baricade as much and is really a joy to shoot. I will probably be using it in some local matches this year that have a tendency to be more positional and shorter distances. If it was all I had I wouldn’t hesitate to use it but I wouldn’t build a dedicated PRS gun on a 22 cal.

I mainly shoot HP XTC and LR, but when i shoot PRS, I just run one of my XTC T2ks in 6xc with either a muzzle brake or a suppressor. Hard to beat combination.

To expound on the "No" above, Stages are timed, you need to be able to reload quickly, so you would be super disadvantaged to run something that didn't have detachable magazines

I'll agree with the above advice recommending 6mm or 6.5mm short action cartridge. Popularity swings towards the 6mm's lately, favoring the small side somewhere between 6BR and 6x47 with Dasher as the most popular among the winning shooters. The bigger 6's like 6XC or 6 Creed as well as 6.5x47 and 6.5 Creed all can be very competitive.

However once you've got a 6 or 6.5 that shoots half decent, the rest is on you. Like @Delfuego says, this game is about practice and repetition. Most anyone that is any good is shooting a LOT. I killed a 223 barrel this year on barricade practice alone.

It wouldn't be a horrible choice if you wanted to use a semiauto. Some clubs have semiauto divisions. But 224V is still being sorted out since it's so new on the market. Some guys on the Hide are getting great groups "for a semi" with Craddock barrels.

Semi's are a bit harder to shoot consistently in general than bolt rifles, is the thing. Though certain stages can benefit by using a semi. Years ago I got second place at a 2 day tactical match with one in 6mmART40 but back then they had this stupid rule making one unload, take the mag out, and show the chamber clear when ever there was movement, instead of just putting the safety on, lol, I'm still angry about it as I likely would have won that match. Might want to check your local rules concerning this.

I'd for sure wait till reliable factory mags suited for 224V in bolt rifles are available.
