ducks-and-bucks

I have a CVA Accura - camo synthetic stock, silver barrel, nikon omega scope on it that I picked up for fun... it has a 1:28 twist.... I have been trying this pyrodex pellets with sabots, and regular muzzleloading bullets and can not for the life of me get this sob to shoot with a darn! I've come to the conclusion that pyrodex pellets arent worth a flip and I need to measure out some kind of powder to tune a load up... Thats all I can think to do... Anyone have advice on which powder to use for muzzle loaders? I know jim shocky markets some stuff, never heard anyone using it.. and truthfully I dont know anyone else that shoots a muzzle loader either..

any help is appreciated.. even bullet selection..

I used Pyrodex pellets in my Thompson Encore with sabots it worked very well out to 200 yards. I will dig it out and check the twist. Consistant seating depth was key.

I too have had better accuracy with loose powder. Also I find that too strong if a primer will push to bullet forward some before ignition causing accuracy problems , which I feel is why loose powder works better . As far as what to use. , the last powder I was using was triple. 7. Now a single shot. 4570 is what we use for primitive weapons

White Hots are better. Get the nipple for blackhorn 209 loose powder and this is the best. Do you have a tight or loose bore with sabots. Call Harvester Muzzleloader for the correct sabot for your bore. Get their pt scorpion bullet. You will have the bullets touching at 100 yds if you do your part. My son has the cva accura mr rifle. With above components he shoots knots at 100yds and under moa at 200 yds. Federal 209A primers. He uses 70gr by weight scale or 100 by volume of blackhorn 209 powder.

As far as I am concerned the powerbelts are garbage.I have tried them for fun out of a few different guns and they just don't shoot. There is nothing hard about a sabot. You would need sized for you bore bullets to get them to fly correctly.Call parker bullets and tell him what you have and you will have to slug the barrel to get an accurate measurement to have the bullets sized to perform there best.

I've found that I get best accuracy results with blackhorn 209 in the few different muzzle loaders that I've tried it in, and as a bonus it burns really clean compared to most others.

I use triple 7, with MMP sabots 50x45, 250 gr Hornady FTX bullets and 410 primers. Get muzzle loader primers and you will have less problems or 410 primers if you can find them. You can vary work up loads easier and cheaper with loose powder, and regular 209 primers can cause a carbon ring problem fast. Check out Precision Rifle website, those guys really know their stuff. Good luck, Barlow

I have to agree with giving blackhorn 209 a try. I can get very consistent accuracy out of my TC Encore. I used to go with the pellets but found myself looking for more accuracy. For me that was in between the pellet ranges.

Ducks and Bucks,

I have the same muzzle loader as you. I use Blackhorn 209 and Federal 209 shotgun primers. My load is using Barnes 290gr TEZ, and 73.5grs by weight ( 105 by volume). I even tested the load with a Chrony and with three shots it averaged 1890 fps.

In my area we have to hunt open sights ( no scopes allowed). Took a deer at 152 yards, hit high shoulder and ended hitting the spine. Dropped like a sack of potatoes.

+1 on Blackhorn

I actually gave all my remaining Pyrodex and Triple7 to some other muzzleloader at our range just to get rid of it.
Consistent, repeatable and accurate-what's not to like about Blackhorn except the price and unless you are shooting gobs and gobs of blackpowder it just does not matter all that much.

Using a T/C Omega with a 1:20 twist.

BIG QUESTION - no one has answered it for me.... my barrel is 1:28 twist.... what grain bullet is this best used for???

I have the same rifle ( CVA Accura) . Mine shot okay with 250gr TMZ, but when I switched to 290gr TEZ they got more consistent. I went with what the rifle liked, yes a little overkill for deer, but its accurate in my rifle.

I found a pound of triple 7 powder here locally that I am going to try out... I cant get buckhorn here close to where I live, I am going to have to search for it. I need to order some round balls to slug my barrel too....

Most modern in line have a 1 +28 twist when you shoot a sabot bullets. Their is no reason to slug the barrel. A few thing that make them shoot good is. I use triple mag pellets with Barns or Knight bullets and sabot they have a special sabot for their boat tail bullets. You must use their seating jag to keep the straight. Next how you seat the bullet the same every time is critical to accuracy. On a clean barrel seat the bullet on the powder with firm pressure and mark your cleaning rod. Always seat your bullet to the mark on the rod. Do not do it by feel. Some carbon so bad you must patch between loadings. All the breach plugs are different so you will find primers make a big difference. I have found glass cleaner the best to clean with.

often you may need to slow down at the range to get it to "group" because that is not what it is designed to do. If you are getting the barrel hot you are softening the plastic sabots and your groups open up.

Fifteen minutes between shots. After you get your scope dialed in try to limit your shots to about three an hour.

Before I switched to smokeless ML I shot loose triple 7 measured with a brass tool. I shot 250 shockwaves over 100 grains.

My old Knight rolling block would always shoot three inside 5 inches at 200 yards, and more often that not I could put two inside of three inches.

I always wet patched with two patches followed by one dry between loads.

ducks & bucks, Just a friendly reminder to check out Precision Rifle on the web. There is a ton of good info there. Muzzle loaders are the only thing they do. Especially for the new ML shooter. Barlow

Cabelas and Basspro Shop have Blackhorn209 on their shelves. I buy the 5 pound keg from PowderValley Inc from this site. Blackhorn has done extensive testing and recommends Federal 209A or CCI shotgun primers.

You are getting great advice. Blackhorn 209 is "head and shoulders" above all other propellants.

During some earlier testing with my Thompson Center Omega, I loaded over 25 shots and hit perfectly without cleaning. Seriously. Got tired loading and shooting so I stopped.

Watched another guy get into the high teens with loaded shots and no cleaning. He got tired testing that also.

TC Shock Wave 250 with the BLACK sabot work well Do not use those yellow Super Glide Sabots if you want to shoot well. Only takes about 75 grains (by volume) of 209 to get
all the velocity you need. I have killed two recent deer at 150 - 160 yards DRT with the combination.

All other powders, pellets or loose, suck compared to Blackhorn 209.
