Any experience with this outfitter?

Four of us from the sunny south are trying to plan a squirrel shoot this spring in southern Oregon..

With airfare and everything it is going to be quite an expensive trip from Atlanta.

Have any of you guys had any experience with the Honker Inn Lodge?

If you have had a BAD experience, please do NOT post it on the thread, just PM me.

Thanks,
Chuck

Chuckw2:

I know nothing about this outfitter, but I hunt prarrie dogs on a regular basis. You can do your homework up front, stay in a motel, B&B, hunting lodge, and shoot to your hearts content with or without a guide. You can use the internet and contact the department of wildlife in the state you want to go to. You can contact the County AG agent and he can put you int contact with farmers who have Prarrie dog towns.

I ship my ammo, portable shooting bench, and sun shade to myself to the motel where I am going to stay. I include prepaid return shipping labels and some packing tape. I rent a car usually a stationwagon or trail blazzer. It is the best hunt I go on. Many big game hunts end with little or no shooting. When I go for Prarrie dogs it is a bad day when I have not shot 1000 rounds. I recomend a .223 with super explosive bullets, the brass is cheap, and you don't have to much problem with ricochet. The wap of a 50 gain SX bullet running 3400fps is very rewarding. I have hunted Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, North and South Dakota. For Ground squirrls I have hunted in Alberta Canada.

Chuck,

You do not need to pay an outfitter to shoot ground rats in Northern California towns like Alturus and Cedarville.

The farmers and ranchers will welcome you with open arms.

You will run out of ammo before you run out of rats. I go twice a year, my best trip ever was 450+ rats in two days. I've never shot less than 300+ in a weekend.

Our rats are Belding Digger Squirrels-destructive little SOB's. Very small and a challenge to get a t 500 yards.

PM me your phone number and I'll hook you up with the rancher I use.

He has a war wagon for you to shoot off of . They give him real good reports in the Varmint hunter magazine .

MrMister,
Looks like a good area to hunt. Where in the world is it? General area.
Looks like a 17hmr rifle. Which one did you get?
I got a cz varmint 17hmr with a weaver v16 on it. shoots good.

Shooter, I have seen the War Wagon and it looks like a hoot!

Surprise Valley up in Nor Cal has an annual event called Squirrel Wars which is an absolute madhouse and how they get an insurance company to under write the event is beyond me.

Go before or after and you'll have the place or at least a ranch all to your self.

PJ,

The area my son is shooting is Cedarville Ca. Are you in California?

The 17HMR he is shooting belongs to a buddy. It's one of the original Savage R93's. Perfect for him but I have sense bought him a 17HMR Mach 2.

We give him everything within 100 yards-everything else belongs to the "old man".

His mother wasn't crazy about this one but he took this rat at 137 yards with a 22 Mag from his Marlin Model 95!
