Any case prep on New 6.5x47 L Brass

I run the cases thru an expander mandrel/die, inspect the flash holes for any debris, and prime/load them. Your loaded diameter will be around .2895-.290. My 6.5X47L is a no turn neck with a .292 chamber.

Frank's spot on.

The only thing I would ad is chamfer neck edges lightly.

Do you know what the neck dia is on your chamber?

If it's a .292 or .293 neck dia. It you can lightly turn the neck to get you a bit more consistincy when seating. But then again I'm particular. LOL

My loaded and turned rounds measure .2885 on a .291 chamber

What powder and bullets are you using?

Have recently measured a batch for a general reading of 50 new Lapua 6.5x47L cases out of 200 in my batch, using Mitutoyo Micrometers. Ball Micrometer for neck thickness. Accuracy rating 0.00005 and 0.0001 respectively.

I found that the neck thickness varies from 0.013" to 0.01325" out of the box. Using a Berger 130gr VLD which has a pressure ring and get an average reading of 0.26410" I end up with 0.29040-0.29050" which is in my view is a little tight for a 0.292" neck.

My neck size is 0.294" and is fine for me but if I had a 0.292" neck I would most certainly be turning the necks a tad.

The way I see it is that a 0.293-4" neck is no turn, anything less you need to turn. At least a very mild skim which I would prefer to do so my next re-chamber will be the 0.292" and neck turn for concentricity.

Actually I dont have the rifle yet and my smith has not sent me the chamber specs yet, I'm just trying to get everything ready for when she arrives next week. I did inform him I wanted a NO neck turn chamber. I do plan on deburring the flash holes (being neccessary or not) with K&M tool, uniforming primer pockets and chamfering the case mouth and was'nt for sure if I should skim turn the necks. Thats why I'm asking so I would know what the norm is.
Should I uniform the primer pockets after the first firing or before?
In my target guns 30BR and 30x47 I always done all the above steps along with neck turning before the first firing.

Of the Small Flash Hole Lapua Cases I use, 6mmBR & 6.5x47L, I do not deburr flash holes as so far I have not found the correct size tool to use. The K&M Flash Hole deburring tool in my view is too large being 0.062". The Lapua specification states the flash hole as being 1.5mm or 0.059" so in using the deburring tool will open the flash out to 0.062". It's only 0.003" but I have been warned not to touch the flash hole by a number of very highly regarded and accurate competition shooters. Whilst they continue to win National Competitions I will listen to their advice.

I have read that some Lapua Cases have been found to have a small flake of brass on the inside edge of the flash hole as a result of punching the flash hole in manufacture but I have never looked for this. I use a K&M Controlled Depth Tapered Reamer for the inside of all my necks and the guide that fits in the flash hole is 0.059" in diameter. During use I have had on a couple of occasions not been able to push the guide into the flash hole and needed to insert it from the case base end and I believe it may have been this flake of brass which was cleared from the hole.

I also use the K&M Primer Pocket Correction Tool to uniform all depths to the set 0.122" control depth.

These procedures are done on all my new cases prior to their first firing.

Even with my 0.294" necked rifle I do neck turn to improve concentricity. Most cases would only show roughly a 80% cut around the neck which is enough to get me the 0.001" or less concentricity runout I aim for after fire forming.
