anschutz 64 silhouette

can anyone tell me how well it shoots benchresting. i purchased one and totally refinished it and wanting to try my hand at competition shooting.

I shot 22 Silhouette for 10 years with an Anschutz 64 and Anschutz Sporter rifles (heavy & light). Tried at least 20 different brands of ammo and finally settled on RWS 50. My buddy using a Lilja barreled 40X action in a plastic stock could always shoot slightly smaller groups from the bench than I could. Looking back I can now see my rest, position, and trigger control were the culprits. Benchrest shooting requires great concentration, consistent repetition and I lacked those skills at the time. The 64 should serve as a great learning tool.

Dale,
Do not under estimate the capabilities of a 64 action. I recently sold my 64mpr (for a new centerfire build) that I used a a couple of years in local Benchrest Competition. It shot extremely well (using Federal Ultra Match UM22) and more often than not, placed me either at the top or in the top 5 (in a field of 15 - 20 shooters). Like any other Rimfire rifle (no matter the make or model) you have to find the ammo your rifle performs the best with. Ultra Match was it for mine and the rest was up to me. The ONLY thing I did with mine, was to add a Harrel Tuner (and a Leupold 35X scope). Otherwise it was exactly like how she came out of the box, except for a small trigger adjustment. And I was able to outshoot even some shooters with 54 actions. So when you get up into this category, I'm convinced the rifle can only bring you so much and the rest is up to you. But that is also true for centerfire rifles as well. So do test and find your best ammo. I spent an entire summer doing just that and it paid off. BTW, even that wasn't cheap as my practice ammo ending up being Lapua Midas+, that after testing EVERY other "Match Ammo" made (UM1 was extinct by then). Guess I had an Annie with expensive taste. But then this sports isn't exactly a cheap hobby.

the 64 silhouette is one great silhouette gun. i been using one since 1982 in smallbore silhouette. great 2 stage trigger and a very low trigger pull weight. the rifle should work in any kind of rifle match if out fitted with the proper equipment/scope/ammo. the rifle will do it's job, the rest will up to the shooter.
