Anschutz 54 action glued in barrel

I have an Anschutz 54 action with a barrel that was glued in with Locktite. Would like to remove. I know heat will release it but would like to go another route. Ideas please.

Use the heat.
I agree with Dusty. I can't imagine what a better option would be. Beats a bigger hammer! Lol! It does not, or should not take nearly enough heat to damage or alter the action. They are often glued in with a light interference fit but again, heat is the answer to the press fit. I''ve heated the action and quickly pushed the barrel out with a rod through the action using the tail stock on the lathe. Many people just beat them out with a brass rod, a big hammer..and heat.
Sorry, but I don't know of a better option. Ya gotta or IMO, should, get the glue to soften up either way...unless you go the big hammer route.

If you're nervous about the possibility of annealing the steel, use an electric heat gun - it can't begin to reach a temperature that will change the temper of the metal. A propane torch adjusted for a low-temperature flame (propane -rich - not yellow but almost) will fairly forgiving; just don't overdo it. You only want to soften the LocTite, not burn it; the ash from burning it would actually tend to lock the barrel in place. If you start to see smoke, stop heating!!

An iron set on the scope base would be perfect

This. I put a small wedge shaped rubber plug at 6 o'clock between the barrel and forend to provide a little upward tension. Set the iron on the receiver and go away for a while, maybe even get some work done ;-). A half hour or so on med or high and it will pop right out.

I'd in no way shape or form suggest an open flame...

Hey ken i think you mis read his post. Hes trying to remove a barrel glued into the action

Sure did. Ooops!
Unless it has been threaded, a little heat and a press. I made a pusher mandrel and ring to set on the face of the action ring and push them out on the lathe with the tail stock.
That sounds exactly like what I have done as well. A little heat goes a long way.
I don't remember seeing it...To the op, is there a specific reason why you wish to avoid heating the action up? (glue in, maybe) Most of the loctites need about 300° to soften sufficiently. That is not anywhere near hot enough to alter the steel and will be a big help, imo.

Slightly off topic, but have you guys noticed that the Anschutz 54 and 64 tennons are slightly tapered? Same with the bore in the receiver.

I don't do much rim fire work but the ones I have seen have been straight, iirc. I do think it'd be a good thing for it to have a slight taper fit.
