If I wait for an ideal day to do ammo testing and shoot, I will have a week in August to do so each year. To remedy this, I have gone to testing ammo using a head-to-head fashion across multiple days. While it is early in the process with my 1761, the data I have collected over time with my other rifles is more useful. The over-time approach seems to better account for variations in daily conditions, my shooting, etc. than the single calm day. Others may have different experiences or views. I realize this will not be how others see it.
I had some time to take my Anschutz 1761 with a Swampfox Kentucky Long 5 to 30 x 56mm to the range. It was very windy. The winds were gusty in the 5 mph to 20 mph range, shifting directions and inconsistent. The temperature was around 60F degrees.
I was shooting from a bench. I used a Grizzly Bald Eagle front rest with a Sinclair front bag rider on the rifle. The rear rest was a Protektor #13 bag sitting on a custom rear bag rider. The rear bag rider removes the effect of any cast in a rifle stock. Scope is a Swampfox Kentucky Long in 5 to 30 x 56mm.
The targets are ARA Open or Unlimited class targets set at 50 yards. As the wind was strong the targets were solidly staked to avoid as much movement as possible. It seems some variation people have shown when shooting in the wind has been due to the movement of the target due in the wind. I think I was effective in being able to get the target solidly set. While the target does not move you will in one sequence that a secondary target blew off the backing in the middle of the shooting sequence. I believe it is during the second SKLRM target sequence.
