Going to back a couple or more decades with this one.
I had been hired by a New York firm to shoot stills for a reality TV show out in the Big Bend. Sylinda and I had been on the set for about five days and finished the shoot one afternoon in time to drive to Ft. Davis for the night. While she rested I grabbed my gear and headed up the mountain as a storm was brewing. About half way up I noticed some unusual activity some 12 feet up in an agave plant. Instantly I recognized a fox firmly secured up among the blossoms capturing flying insects buzzing about the flowering head.
From decades of predator work, I knew not to slow down as the fox would be alerted by the reduced engine RPM, so I continued on up until out of sight. Grabbing a Canon 500mm lens with an F1n body w/ motordrive and eased up behind some shrubbery but realized I needed to be closer so waited until the fox’s attention was diverted toward the insects before making a 10 yard dash to a closer position. Kneeling down I manually focused the big lens just as the fox spotted me. After only two frames the fox leaped from the stalk like a flying squirrel and was gone. Until the 50 ISO Velvia chrome film was developed I was concerned that the focus might not have been perfect. I was sweating it! But, alas, I got lucky that day! It was a shot one can only dream of!
Wishing all a fun and safe weekend!
