Bought a rifle some time back, a Borden B in a Paulownia wood Roy Hunter BR stock. The stock had several minor dents and dings and I don't care for the light color but it has some decent figuring to it.

I've got it smoothed out pretty well, not perfect but good. Next up is something I've not tried yet but I'm gonna spray some root beer kandy koncentrate mixed in the clear over it. I think and hope it'll look similar to a decently figured piece of walnut when done, but we'll see in a few days.

Here's a couple of pics of it with the sanded clear.
These are awesome stocks! Wish me luck! I'll post a few after pics when done.

@Bc'z Got any tips buddy?

Mike
I'd rub a coat of copper dye "medium brown and red blended" sand it down with 400 then apply vintage amber.
Prime with Simtech 28x50 easy sanding sealer, block it out, reprise if necessary. Finish in 600 grit, cut rootbeer candy with 20-30% yellow candy, clear with automotive sand and finish with Simtech polyester 37x4 clear.
This is how and what I'd do.
I'm very interested in seeing the outcome!!

I knew you'd have some good advice. I did buy a 8 color candy kit. I might play with that first. I've never used those dyes. Over previously sealed and cleared wood? I do like the idea of a little gold pinstripe of some sort. We'll see how it turns out and go from there. Thanks man!

I didn't know it was sealed. The clear can always be sanded off, pretty painstaking work to say the least.
I use ColorTone dyes from Stewmac luthier supply diluted with bottled water.
HOK rootbeer concentrate is strong, this is why I cut it with yellow candy.
I really do believe a gold leaf stripe will really set it off, under or over the candy is where I'm undecided!. Lol

I would have given you a "like" for this post except for the fact that had I been given these instructions I would have been lost halfway through and just decided on shipping it to you. ;)

Tagged. I like the stock. But I am a sucker for wood.
Rick, Mike knows how to get down with some paint.
The Bel Air stock he did for a friend is spectacular!!

I've used the Kandies mixed in clear over a couple of fiberglass stocks and they did just what I was hoping for. I'll see if I can find a pic. It was brandywine over a Meredith stock that was bright red and black with some silver metal flake. The brandywine darkened it up and tuned the flake red too. I much preferred the end result over it as bought...just my preference.
I did this stock, for about 10 seconds, in a small area with brandywine..then wiped it right off. It looked good but I want to keep this more traditional than red wood. but it's what gave me the idea that this might actually work.
Here's a pic of the red Meredith afterwards.

I couldn't find the pics I was looking for. I think they were on an old phone, unsaved but these give an idea what I mean. A before pic would be nice, but no luck yet. Before the kandy, the red was almost like a hornadt box and it had silver metal flake, fwiw.

I like the stock painting threads and seeing peoples benchrest stocks/ rifles. Always interesting to see what people create and looking at br rifles is just fun!
Trust me...I have no idea what I'm doing but that's part of the fun with this one. Sandpaper will fix it if it doesn't go well. Lol! That Bel Aire stock was almost the color of yours. I think the difference was made in 1956 or 57. It was 1957 Tropical Turquois with pearl white and a little silver. The friend had told me his first car was a 57 Chevy and I tried to get close to that. His was copper and cream or white but tough..I liked the turquoise better. Lol! He gave me a blank check to do whatever I came up with. Not money, just design.

I have another one in the works that should be really cool if it doesn't surpass my abilities. It'll be a pearl white with a very light, almost silver, bronze flame. We'll see sometime soon.

I knew it! This is [partly] why your stocks rock. ;)

sounds like a trip to the candy store (house of candy) is on the agenda!!!!
or he could send it to you and have it back with the ironclad warranty lol!!!!!
parts and labor may be ahead of the game, but Mike is a craftsman all to his own and probably likes to stretch his skillset every now and then!!!!!
