Another question about cataract surgery

Anybody recently have the "crystalens" or the advanced lens that is supposed to give you the both of best worlds with correcting for distance and up close?

I have seen lots of negative reviews [pre-2014] saying for many people it has not given any better correction for up close and still need reading glasses. Also mentions about halos at night and just not happy with the correction.

Before I dump the extra cash for this miracle lens, I am hoping to hear from any shooters that have had this done.

I don't have the miracle lens so can't address that. I do still have to have reading glasses and I have ghost images at distance. For instance if I look at a bird flying against a bright sky, or the program guide on my TV, there is a double image, so it looks like I am going to have to go back to bifocals just like I had before but not quite as strong. I also now have floaters, which I did not have before. I can see well at mid-distance now though...10ft or so. I would really like to find an eye doctor who understands the shooting sports, but have had no luck in that regard. Having said all that, I do see better than I did before the surgery.

I had cataract surgery about four years ago. I discussed the various types of "bi-focal" cataract lenses at length with both the OD that does my annual checks and the MD that did the surgery. Both mentioned a few patients with problems such as halos, driving at night, etc. Enough problem cases that they didn't recommend the "bi-focal" lenses, but said they would use them at my request. The OD had his cataracts done a few weeks before mine, so I asked what he had decided for himself. When he said, "single vision" my decision was made. I have better than 20/20 distance vision and use el cheapo reading glasses for close work, althouh I can still read the newspaper without them if necessary. Over a period of several years after the surgery my vision deteriorated badly, to the point I was having trouble driving or reading even with the glasses. The MD did an out-patient laser procedure to correct the problem and my vision is even better than after the original surgery. Good luck! Vic

Give me about a month and I can give you a current update. I am having the right eye done on Feb.4 and the left eye will be done on Feb. 19. My VA DO. suggested that I get the distance only, not the bi-focal but permitted me to make the choice. That is the direction I am going. At 71, I feel I will be able to shoot for at least 15 more years. As a new benchrest shooter I just hope I don't embarrass my rifle!! Don

Don I think you are making the right decision. Before surgery a bullseye looked like a figure 8 and I couldn't tell which one was the target. Now I shoot one hole groups. I can even see iron sights well enough to hunt sage rats with a 22 target pistol. I still use reading glasses for small print. Hope all goes well for you. Bob

I developed cataracts at the fairly young age of 50 and although my cataracts were not considered bad enough for surgery, I had it done. That was 4-5 years ago. My corrected vision is 20/20 in each eye.

I chose the Restore multifocal lenses. I can see close up and I can see long distance without the use of my former coke bottle glasses. There is an area, about arms length, that can be blurry at times. The dashboard in my car comes to mind as being in that range. (Not a big deal.)

I also require more light to see small print like newspapers or magazines. But, in reverse, I also needed sunglasses in the bright sun for the first few years. Not so much anymore. I also had slight loss of peripheral vision. I was told it's from the sergical incisions. I know of one other that did not notice any loss of periphical vision. You may want to ask your doctor about it.

I can't say it helped my shooting but, it didn't hurt it either and it certainly helped with everyday activities. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I am having cataract surgery on Feb. 4 and the OD suggested the long range only. I could have either for the same cost, but I am going with the Dr's suggestion. Will let everyone know how it goes. Really sucks that I will not be able to shoot until the end of March but I will then be visiting PA (grandchildren!!!). In May/June will be looking for rockchucks. Don E
