So, I'm at the range yesterday and am asked by RO to help a guy zero a rifle. The shooter said he had missed a huge buck at 50 yds with his "trusty, but rusty" 270. He had fired a full box of ammo to zero, but had never touched the target.
I pulled the bolt and set it up to bore sight. He had 2 pristine targets at 100. At first, I thought the bore and crosshairs were dead center. I was a bit confused, but then realized the bore was on left target and crosshairs were centered on the right target, 2 1/2 ft away. Luckily he had a Leupold adjustable rear base, so it was pretty easy to get him zeroed. He thanked me, then asked me if I'd help with his other rifle zero. This is where it gets strange.
He said it had always been very accurate, but he had shot it 4 or 5 times that day and something was wrong with it. I set up some bags to help him get solid. He loaded a round, or tried to, and kept trying to chamber it. Said it had been pretty hard to close the bolt earlier, but had finally closed.
I took the rifle and RO used a rod to knock the shell out. Yep!, it was a 25-06 he was using in his 22-250. He had fired the 4-5 rounds without injury and didn't seem to think it was a big deal. That was a new one on me, didn't think he could have chambered it.
