Another 'finding the lands' story

Feedback on the target paper for the fotografers among us. The Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte proved to be excellent target paper, leaving clean, round holes. I'll definitely consume my box of it. :D

There seems to be a typo in F. Guffey's first post. I think he means 'push the bullet out of the case until it hits the lands.'
I have actually tried this amd was not able to push the bullet out of a Lee collet die sized case.
I ended up stripping the bolt, adjusting the seater die down in small increments until the bolt closed easily.
I do see the virtue of having as much bullet hold as possible, and using this case as a transfer. I just put the case with bullet in the seating die and turn the seater down until it hits the bullet. Then turn it down more to get the jump I want.
The threads on my Lee seater seem to measure about .07, so for .05 jump I turned the seater down about .7 of a turn.

When attempting to get a measurement to lands in my new CBI barrel, I was getting a lot of inconsistencies in the numbers I was coming up with, so I got out my endoscope camera and looked into the throat. To my surprise, the lands rose up abruptly at the end of the throat, and had a burr. The lands appeared twice as high as they were wide in the camera view, like nothing I'd ever seen in a barrel that had been shot.

So I decided to do the measuring after the barrel had been shot a bit. Looked again with the camera after 20 rounds down the tube, BIG CHANGES in the looks of the lands. Without a camera, I would have been oblivious to the changes that occur in the first few shots down a new barrel.

Measurements taken after break-in were consistent and much different than before.

Similar but slightly different method. Set up 10 bullets seated long in ready to load cases (w/no primer or powder). Close the the bolt on the bullet only case now you will be slightly jammed. Remove the round, and start seating the bullet in .001 increments you can easily feel when you are at touch or very close. No jam for me, as I am not going to shoot with jam in a match and risk sticking a bullet. If you do this at the range, you can do this will a fully loaded round.
