I was on my way to work this morning when boss called it a day, so I turned around grabbed my fox pro, rifle and range finder. My neighbour has been having some issues and have called a lot of coyotes on his property over the late winter.
I set up, beautiful morning over a large corn field sister on a large apple orchard. Turned on female yodel howls, and fem sub and waited 30 seconds and from right in front of me I heard a bark and a short howl. There’s 2 patches of long long grass, one at 55 yards and one at 268 yards. I turned on eastern Cottentail and 2 seconds later a large bodied, skinnier looking coyote comes out of the closer patch of grass. I turn the rifle towards him and notice he has a brutal limp favouring his front right leg.
I settle in behind the rifle and squeeze a shot. The rifle is a custom build 260. Rem pushing 140 hunting Berger’s at 2800fps. It is one of the most accurate rifles I’ve ever laid behind. As I squeeze the trigger and let the noise break quiet air the coyote turns and starts to limp painfully slow across the field. I check the scope and noticed I forgot to dial my scope back down from when I shot last and was dialed into 450 yards. I rezero, turn back on him and drop the coyote. Upon inspecting him, I notice either a broken bone sticking out of his front paw or a large stick Jambed in his paw. It was a large dog but not in the best of shape. Probably did him a favour!
