Another day of groundhog hunting.

Yesterday saw 11 shot at 8 dropped 8 recovered 7 , a fox made off with one a little one, some of these were 28 inches long from nose to end of tail. Check out the solar plexus shot on the one, @ 191 lasered yards with the Halo. A phenomena when hit just below where bone meets the soft spot on a frontal shot explodes them , this has happened 3 times in July, and once again yesterday. No shots were less than 150 out to 212 yards.Great spot . Barnyard, gtjpeg, solar plexus explosion,gt6jpeg,ytdjpeg, one view, a bruiser perfect shot between shoulder blades looking away at 209 yards , on point ytd2 treeline to top of hill 266 yards, one down at 129 yards, another vantage point where trees end 300 yards, addendum below in replies

Good looking field. Brings back memories.

That "can" is something I never heard of when I hunted those "hogs" from the 50's through the 90's. Sure must be nice to be quiet.

Quiets the hornet down considerably, and the gh's come out again sooner than later, can't completely quiet a supersonic round but the difference is amazing, you can hear the bullet smack them before you here the subdued crack.

I'll tell you how bad it is here in eastern PA at the farms where I hunt. Wednesday the weather was perfect, no wind, mild temperature, absolutely beautiful day. They had cut hay about 5 days ago. The alfalfa was the perfect height, nice and juicy. So, inviting I almost ate some for supper.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

From my set up point, I watch three fields and two tree lines from 4 to 8 PM. Saw one hog, 187 yards which I got. One hog! In the old days I'd see 10 to 12 in this area. Did see 3 foxes, and about half dozen deer.

Another farmer called a little while ago, hay is cut, wants the "Ground Hog Man" to come out. What the hell, I ain't got nothing better to do so I guess I will go, sit, smoke a cigar, and take a nap.

Time to add coyote hunting to your repertoire.

You and I should get together sometime and cry in each other's beer:D:D. That is exactly the way it is/was around this area.

About 15-20 years ago when I first noticed the "Chuck population dwindling and the coyote population exploding, it dawned on me that maybe to curb wasting my time I should take along a mouth call in an attempt to diversify my target selection. ( I really like a good smorgasbord. ) And it works!!!! It took me a few trips to figure it out and within a few more trips I was able to bag a coyote or two now and then and sometimes a chuck or two. Make that a stiff bourbon and beer chaser and I am your guy. ;) It's an old Pittsburgh thing - a shot and beer, from my former hometown. And yes, I am Steeler fan. So, with you being from Ohio might make for a tumultuous meeting. o_O

Going out today at the request of a good farmer friend, we'll see what happens, he just cut the hay and was complaining about a few new holes in the field. I don't expect much but one never knows when it comes to hunting, always expect the unexpected. I expect a few cigars, a nap, and little to no shot opportunities.

I should, given all my old age, declining physical condition, and deteriorating hunting conditions, just give it up but I just can't, at least now. Been slowly transitioning to informal target shooting at the range. Dug out my old Harris bipods to do some somewhat practical bench shooting.

Ground hog hunting around here has become like deer hunting, you might see one shooter buck if you're lucky. :(

They are here for sure, see signs but the guys I know that do really well at that hunt them at night with night vision equipment.

I've only gotten three and those were all by chance while hunting groundhogs in early evening. I've call a few in but they hung up on me not giving me a shot opportunity. Saw a monster about 8 PM a week ago but he made me and ducked into a tree line.

Tons of foxes in my area and they are a comparably easy to hunt. PA has a season on them now and you need a fur takers license, still, the opportunities are good in my area.

GH's will not go extinct by coyotes overkilling them, all my areas are coyote infested.I never go anywhere without a call when hunting, just a couple weeks ago while no GH's were seen a coyote was and he was doa. Article was posted here, this week I hit 100 gh's since June 1st and am far from done. One must travel and persevere, they're out there somewhere.
