Another 6br newbe with a couple questions.

I want some variation of the 6br... A 6BR or a 6BR Dasher...I dont want to anneal or turn necks right now... I live in the middle of nowhere so I have basically one gun shop with a smith if i choose to have him build it... or interwebz shopping to amass the components and build it myself... Is this something I can tackle? I have very good mech\fab\wood working skills. The gun would be for 500-600yd targets and pdog shooting. Ive been looking for a donor action, but havent found anything that i want to use, so im lookind at buying parts now. Would i be better off to just buy a factory Savage and be done with it or have the smith do it... Thanks_DRG

All I did was use a Stevens 200 action for mine.Even went with a used barrel..

Seems to work ok for me so far..I did add a Bell And Carlson stock though..And put in a trigger basic kit..Did it all myself..The guy that had the barrel, said it had 700 rounds thru it,so I figured it still had a lot of life left...Works for me..Good luck with yours..

I'm not sure what part of SD you live in but Chad at Longrifles in Sturgis does top quality work, check his web site.

Thanks,
He's a couple hundered miles away, so if I get out that way I will check him out... I probably couldn't afford to have him build me one though. I had hoped to find a good used one w/dies and all, but I ask around and mention 6BR and people don't know what im talking about. ???

When they see you shoot them little groups. They will want to know what caliber it is. 8 twist or 14twist you can't go wrong. Great cartridge.

Hi dgr,

You cannot loose choosing the 6 BR. I suggest you go with one from Cooper Firearms, if you can wait 4-6 months. You might need this down time to gather up all the various loading components with today's market craziness.

If you decide going this route you will be pleased with the results.

Good luck and good shooting.

yes the lack of... well everything is just insane... all im needing for the 6BR would be the brass and getting the dies...and of course the money... i would love to have one for this years pdog shooting... we got a foot of snow a few days ago and I drove through our little dog town today and there were a few out and running about. made my finger itch...

DRG,
IMHO, depends on how much you have to spend overall and the effort you want to put into a build. Personally, I have both the Savages and have had my Gunsmith do some building for me. If money is the issue, you'd be better off just buying a new or even used Savage. Even though one of my Savage's is a 6mm Benchrest Rilfe, it is unquestionable the most accurate and reliable OUT OF THE BOX rifles I've ever bought. She's never required any gunsmithing (only slight trigger adjustment) and shoot lights out. Now if you want to play, I'd be looking for a Remington 700 action and play from there as your basic platform. You can buy a Savage Target action if you want, but if I were "building" I sure as heck wouldn't use that accutrigger mechanism which is the only downside of any of my 4 Savages. They all shoot extremely well (feel nice too) which is why I like them. Good luck whichever way you end up going.
