Another 6BR build ?

Hello all,
Well my gunsmith called me today and said my barrel would be here in March. It's a Krieger 4 groove 8 twist, it will have a finish length of 28". Now I'm getting excited that it's on the list for delivery, since they're 7-9 months wait !!! I'm building this on a fairly new Rem 700 short actioned VLS platform. It will be bedded, pillars, trigger upgrade, and the stock will be floated and skim coated full length. It has a Leupold 8.5 x 25 with VH recticle. The action also has the "J" bolt ..what are the better optioins to change this out for a good one (brand)?
So my questions are...after reading the forum here..
The chamber...I will be using the new blue box brass...Should I buy a custom reamer for this? I know Sid doesn't have any for the new brass, I think he said he can go down to .271". If so...from who and what to ask for ? I want to shoot 87-107grs pills from it. My ranges will be from 100 - 1000yds. I don't mind neck turning...done lots of PPC cases. I don't want a thin wall neck tho...maybe just a skim cut to true them up some. What do you advise for this?? What free bore will suit multiple bullets accurately ? I have a Redding S bushing die set already...just not a lot of bushings. Not sure if I know enough about this cartridge to be asking the right questions...so advise if you think I missed something.
Thank you for your time on this !!
Dave

I have shot the blue box brass in a .272 chamber and had no problems my loaded round measured .268 with a Berger 105 and the gun shot in the high .1s to low.2s What more could you ask for.

T 700

My reamer as per Kiff recommendation for a no turn Blue Box .2704, My Fb is .60 for up to 95 gr., eventually you throat will erode and you will be chasing the lands.

A 0.271 neck will be fine. (Some of the blue box brass is a little thicker than the first shipments, so I personally wouldn't go 0.270).

You don't mention the full name of the Smith. If it is Sid Goodling I know he'll do a good job and he can use his own reamer.

Re Freebore, an 0.080 Freebore (measured the way JGS and PTG specs reamers) will let you shoot everything from 60s to 107s. But with the 95gr Berger VLD you won't have much bearing surface in the neck.

If you will be primarily shooting inside 400 yards, I don't think the Dasher/BRX/BRDX is worth the extra trouble -- and yes I shoot/own these as well as a standard 6BR. If your primary purpose for the gun is 600+ yard competition, then yes, the 100-120 fps you gain with improved cartridge MIGHT be worth it. But in general I've found it's very easy to get a std 6BR to shoot really small. With a Dasher/BRX it can be equally accurate, but you may have to fuss a bit more to get great results.

Re throat erosion and freebore. I use "gentle" cleaning methods (wet solvent patches and Wipeout, no abrasives), and my throat has only moved .007 in 800 rounds. YMMV if you clean aggressively or have carbon issues that require scrubbing.

Thank you for the replies !! To answer some of the questions in no order...Yes, gunsmith is Sid Goodling...he has done several rifles for me varmint and 6PPC and 6x47L competition. He's about an hour away from me !! As for working brass...anymore just the the turning is all I really want to do, not so much on fireforming ! I know the improved versions all have good attributes, but the straight 6BR does as well. If later on I want to change I still can. Right now just want the BR. I will have to measure some dummy rounds and see what they measure with the bullets I have. I have plenty of 95gr VLDs a couple years old from when I used them in a 6x47L. I think they will be my main bullet. I have a lot of 105 VLDs and 107 SMKs too. But still would like to shoot some of the 87gr V-max's. I will look into the freebore some more. I'll have to call Sid as well. I guess from more reading..looks like something between .060 and .090. With the .060 FB how deep are the 95VLDs in the neck for bearing surface? Does the 6BR like more bullet in the case and what type of neck tension ? I know it's something to work at during load development...just looking for a good starting point.
Thanx again,
Dave

I wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket with either the 87gr V-Max or the 95 VLD. A lot of guys like the 87-grainer, but I personally could never get it to shoot well in a variety of guns. By contrast the 80gr Berger shot like a house on fire and the 90gr Scenar nearly as good.

As to the 95gr VLD -- it's a unique projectile with a long nose and almost no bearing surface. It will shoot good in one barrel, and not very good at all in other barrels. I got it to shoot best in a 0.236-land 3-groove barrel about .012 in lands. But accuracy was disappointing in other barrels.

If you're interesting in the 90gr class I would first try the 90gr Berger and 90gr Scenar -- the "L" version if you can afford them (great bullet, extremely consistent and not 'fussy').

I would not go shorter than .075 Freebore if you want to shoot the 107s.

Every 6mm rifle (12" twist or faster) that I have tried shot the 80 Berger FB extremely well. This is a great bullet with excellent terminal performance. For shots to around 400 yards it is a very good choice.

Dave,

Greg Tannell makes a replacement firing pin assembly that will end your "J" lock woes....

I personally would neck turn the brass,i believe .011 will clean up 100% of the necks, them load a dummy and spec the reamer that way...

You should be in the .265 loaded range with a .267 chamber.

Send Tannel your Remington bolt and have the firing pin hole bushed and sleeved. Combined with one of his fast-lock Lite Steel firing pin assemblies you'll have excellent ignition and no primer issues with pressure.

FWIW I used PT&Gs Dasher reamer with a .2704" neck and .104" FB. Works perfectly with unturned blue-box brass that loads out to .268", I use a .266" bushing.

Good luck.

Well...I know this is an old thread of mine. But today I finally picked up my new rifle. I'll see if can post a pic tomorrow. It's a Bat action, Kreiger 4 groove 8 twist 28"(2 barrels...one for 95gr and one for the 105's), Tooley MBR stock, jewel trigger, and a 15x55 Nightforce with Sheehan rings. All smithed by Sid Goodling. Can't wait for the weather to clear to try it out.

Guaranteed that if you stick with 105 Scenars, Hybrids OR 108's you will be shocked (nicely) at how excellent it is going to shoot!!

Well...It was going to be a Rem...but thought about it for awhile and decided to go full custom...here's a couple pics...not the best pics but...The was supposed to be 50% olive drap-25% grey- 25% black. It's alright...seems like a lot more than the 25% I was looking for.

Primary use is matches...local g-hog out to 500 yrs. Then some 600 and 1000 once I figure it's best load. I had a 6x47 lapua but could never get it to shoot consistently at 600. I should have kept that rifle, but didn't think I was going to compete again. Now I have that craving again and in the right frame of mind.

Dave,

I have BAT B with 2 6BX barrels. It is stocked like your's, red and white MBR. Also have a Stiller Diamondback with 3 6BR barrels. I have had many other 6Br's and BR Imp.

I would do a no-turn neck, 0.0025" to 0.003" less than a loaded round. +1 on what the Boss said about the 95 VLD's. I shot them in a 10tw 6BRBS and did great, but they want shoot in my 10tw 6BR. you 8tw should fine. If the 95 Berger's don't shoot, try the 95gr Bib's or the 90 BT Berger.

I know guys that built a 6x47L and their's also would not shoot.
