Annealing Case Necks

I need some opinions. I annealed some case necks on some of my fired cases and spun them while doing so. I counted 9 seconds and the necks had reached a dull red color, done this in the dark workshop) and then quenched them in cold water immediately. The cases now has a bright blue ring just below the outside shoulder junction. Did I do it right or did I get them too hot?

I'd say you did just fine. That's how I do mine. You'll find long necked cases like 06 or 270's only take around three seconds, but short necks take longer due to the shoulders sucking up the heat, depending on neck wall thickness.

Alf and Preacher, I appreciate your replies. Mr. Moderator, you have a great web site here with some great folks visiting it. Thank you for all your efforts.

Sounds like my method.

I stand them on the back of the vice where my torch head is angled to the correct spot.I set the case in the path of the flame, wait for the medium glow, and tip it into a pan of water next to the vice. The first time I did this was with 1929 head stamped Krag cases. Have gotten many firings from them.

Good luck

You do not need to put the cases in water afterward.

Your method is sound, although slow. I use a Ken Light unit and find it is almost too fast, guess I am strange as I like watching the machine work). I did 500 308 cases this week in about 30 minutes.

I do all the cases I can get Club members to let me have as I have the tool and there is no need for them to buy one.

The Ken Light machine don't need water, but if your spinning them in a rechargeable drill you NEED to cool them down, I dump mine in a bucket of ice water....
I sold my Ken Light, I can do them as fast by hand, and save a bunch of money doing it...
