Analyses of spread at 800 yards......

Hi all. I am trying to hone my skills at L.R. and plan to enter some competitions pretty soon......I'd love some feedback from those more experienced shooters regarding my practice shoot yesterday. Attached is a writeup of my analyses of two 20 shot strings from 800 yards (would have liked to post pictures of the targets, but the files are too large to post on this site). Interesting that the VAST majority of (virtually all) of the sub 10 ring hits were to the right- on both strings. Winds were 0-8 m.p.h. mostly blowing left to right, but they did shift right to left at times (or at least I THINK they did????). Is this a matter of poor wind reading, poor technique, improper scope adjustment, or ALL of the above? Also, based on the attached writeup, is this good enough shooting to take the plunge and enter my first competition (F/TR), or do I need lots more practice? I am finding the hardest aspect of L.R. shooting to be accurately reading the wind- I find myself wanting to just print the X ring out of fear of getting the wind read wrong. Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your vertical is good and that is really about all you tell for sure with this test. I would say since all your horizontal is on one side, it is probably wind induced. Shoot a match with it. It is the best way to test loads. I test loads at matches all the time. I tested annealed brass today at a match. I have loaded three different seating lengths and shot them in separate strings at a match to see what they did.

If you have a chrono, it would be interesting to run some over the chrono and see what the velocity ES or SD is. If you can't do this before your first chance to shoot a match, I wouldn't let it deter me from shooting the match.

I believe DOS XX is correct on his analysis... The far right shots, I believe you may have been "chasing the wind" somewhat OR may be a gust or 2 came up at the right time to move it that far right... BUT your verticals look pretty good.. I would bet your E.S.'s are 15f.p.s. or under..

I would not stop testing your load. It appears you have over 1 moa of vertical, you should be able to improve that, IMO.

Just go to a shoot and have at it...not saying don't practice or continue load dev, but you will learn the most when you give it ago. A surprising number of factors affect scores, not the least of which is nerves and confidence.
Forget about what others are scoring - all you have to do is shoot well for you, after that the scores take care of themselves.
