An odd caliber

A friend of mine has a gun that is in an odd caliber that we can't seem to find any information on. Has anyone ever heard of the 264 True Belted Magnum? It is supposedly based on the 7mm Rem Mag case. He is looking for some brass and dies for it. Redding and RCBS have never heard of it so he would have to send them some cases to make the dies from. I'm thinking that this cartridge may also go by another name. Anyone have any idea?

from what I can tell the .264 win mag was labeled "The Westerner" by Winchester when it first came out. Not sure if it had other names by other manufacturers.

derived directly from the .338 WinMag - In Sierra we trust.

Per Sierra some cautions apply to reloaders with original Win barrels due to the short throat used with a nuique two diameter bullet in factory ammo. HTH

An odd cartridge, maybe, but the .264 isn't really an odd caliber to all of those that shoot .284-6.5 and the 6.5 x 55 Swede............

That was the name of the Winchester rifle, NOT the cartridge - I owned on of the first Winchester Westerner's - it had a 26" barrel, and was a ball to shoot - string flat trajectory. I shot the barrel out having fun with it.

The 264 WM was based on the 338 WM case, both coming out in 1959... three years later, Remington used the same case to advance the 7mm Rem mag later - none of them were based on the 300 WM.

There was one called the apex(6.5 apex magnum,a shortened 300 h&h brass. The loads can be found easily in po ackleys reloading books. Give us an overall length case measurement and as many other measurements and we can figure it out.

I have an extensive data base on almost every wildcat and commercial cartridge ever made.

Ok I'll talk to Frank today and see if he can get me a case. I will post the measurements from the case and see if you guys can come up with anything from that.

I also concur with CJ6 about the cerrosafe. It will be a good identifier of the actual reamer used albeit tight neck or no turn neck etc.

Found out today that he doesn't have any cases for it at all. Loaded or unloaded. He was hoping to find a die so that he could make some. Most likely he is going to have to have a cast made of his chamber. Is that a DYI type of project or is it best done by a smith?

You can do it yourself.I think the cerrosafe comes with specific instructions. You can get it at sinclairs, midway, brownells etc.
