an impressive "reactive" target

i shoot a lot of ghogs and have some that refuse to DRT. a hollow point is supposed to come apart internally dumping it's energy and shutting down the pigs nervous system. poke a big enough hole in a blood vessel and they bleed out...occ after crawling into their hole or under a building...not good. i have been hollowpointing match bullets for some time now to accomplish this and recently tried something that is really impresive and about as much fun you can have while keeping your clothes on. i went from a 1/16 in drill to a 5/64 and opened the tip a bit more. shoot a grapefruit at 100 yds and you get a HUGE exploding water bomb! very small pieces of gfruit fly in all directions. pop one at 200 yds and you hear the whummpp and get the water bomb effect also. the higher the velocity, the greater the explosion. our ranges don't allow steel or tannerite but fruit is ok. oranges will work but a gfrui has thick skin and seems to be 90% water and the difference between the target bullet and the 5/64 in hollow point is pronounced. yes, i do have a lot of free time on my hands.

When I was "a kid" I lived in Buffalo, New York. Just south of us were some of the best 'chuck fields in the northeast. I have shot TONS of them and found some surprising results. I have seen (not just "heard of" but witnessed) 'chucks literally blown in half and the front part crawl a few feet to get to their hole. I have also seen one shot at about 225 yards, flip 2ft into the air and just lay there. Upon inspection the bullet just tore some fur off and NO DAMAGE whatsoever! Explain those 2 differences >> I can't. We used everything from 22-250's thru 25/06's with "varmint" style bullets back then. EVERY "varmint" bullet back then were hollow points. Now in Texas, I shoot, from time to time, prairie dogs and "ballistic tip style" bullets explode much more violently than those old hollowpoints ever did.. The most explosive bullet I have ever found are the Sierra Blitz-King bullets. They literally vaporize prairie dogs! I bet that they would also put MOST 'chucks down and they would be DRT!

I wonder how much of a negative effect the "gaping hole" has on BC, accuracy, etc. for longer range shots? Like in the 400-800 yd range.

It most certainly will have a negative effect on B.C. but not necessarily on accuracy. I used to use the .22 cal 52gr Berger M.E.F. for prairie dogs BEFORE I found out about "Ballistic Tip" style of bullets. Those M.E.F.'s were nothing more than their BenchRest bullets with the hollowpoint opened up significantly.. They were VERY, VERY accurate but not nearly as flat-shooting as I would have liked..

A buddy and I practice our long range shooting on rock chucks with 300 ultra mags. :o ;D You should see what happens to a rock chuck when hit with a 180 grainer moving at over 3000 fps. LOL. I'm using 180 gr. scirracco. My buddy uses a 180 nosler. These bonded bullets will disintegrate a chuck out to about 200 yards. Past the 200 yard mark there seems to be a bit more of them left to see. Sounds like I should try and tear out the plastic tip and drill a hollow point in these scirracco bullets and see what happens..........LOL ;D

The Blitz Kings are awesome! I bet the Nosler Varmagedon bullets would explosive also.

I bet they would also explode and dump all that energy into the varmint in a billi-second, causing mega damage..

.243 70 grain BlitzKing at 200 yards launched from my .243AI at 3900 fps. Many don't exit and when lifted it feels and sounds like a bag of rocks! ;D

If you want real carnage out of those ultras load some 125 nbts. My dad loaded some for his 30-378, they were going 4200 and hit like the hammer of Thor.
