amount of force to button rifle

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how much force it takes to button rifle a barrel, either pull or push?,6 grooves on .30 cal)

Thanks

Think about a chunk of 416 stainless steel, 1-1/4" in diameter with a .30 cal. hole in it. Think of it as a hydraulic line. Now think of how much pressure it would take to rupture it. It's beyond my imagination, but it's not unheard of to split a blank while pulling a button through.

I have pulled both buttons and broaches, but I don't have a figure of how much force it actually takes to pull either, just a lot!

According to Mick McPhee, a Canadian Barrel maker and gunsmith, it takes upwards of 5 tons to button rifle.

It's why stress relieving is so important afterwards
