Ammunition Shipping

Hi,
I have 4 boxes of ammunition that I need to ship. Going through the UPS website and calculating the price it is about $26 which I thought was high so I priced it using the UPS flat rate calculator which was about $14. Under flat rate shipping, Ammunition is a prohibited item unless you conform with UPS/Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service in the US, which I am. Just to be sure I talked to a rep. and was told I can't ship ammunition flat rate even though I am compiling, though no explanation. Said I would have to use UPS ground. Talked to another rep. and got a different answer.

Has anyone had experience using UPS flat rate shipping with ammunition?

Is there a better alternative other than UPS?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gary

Yes ship it by ups ground, you will need a limited quantity sticker on the box. You can print them off or go by Grainger and buy a roll of 100 for 8.00 or so.
Ups is pretty much the only game in town unfortunately

For whatever reason, UPS has different levels of service at its different locations. A UPS store has different rules than a UPS drop off point and they both have different rules than a UPS facility. As I understand it, one can only ship ammo from a UPS facility - not a UPS store or a drop off point. The package requires the limited quantity sticker, affixed point up, as a diamond. This can be found on the UPS website and printed out. The last ammo I sold, my FFL used his UPS person to send it out once I gave him the properly labeled package. It's all unnecessarily complicated for the casual shipper if you ask me but it can be done.

UPS Ground is what I have always used.

I usually pay the extra $11-12 and have it picked up right on my doorstep.

Can't take it to a UPS Store as they will tell you they can't ship it.

If you're shipping out multiple packages of ammo, just pay the pickup cost for 1 as the UPS person will normally take them all regardless.

And don't forget the label.

Personally I would ship it FedEx Ground. Their stores may be FedEX owned (they do not say "FedEx Store" on their signage. I have shipped guns at a FedEx store with no problem.

I have bought .22LR off of Gunbroker and It always arrives in a small box (UPS) without any stickers. Small quantities means less than 72 pounds of ammunition in the shipment. Pretty easy to see there is less than 72 pounds in a very small box.
