ammo sorting question

I am going to purchase a new 22mag or a 17hmr soon for squirrel hunting this season when i find 1 or maybe get 1 used. I am curious as to after i try a few different boxes of ammo out to see which groups best would it be worth while sorting out some ammo to see if the groups could be shrunk some. I have never done this for rimfire or this type ammo and thought it would be kinda fun and something to do for a change to see what kind of results i could come up. If i where to do this what do you guys do and what would you recommend doing. Do you think it would just be a waste of time doing this?

Some shooters check the rounds with a rim gauge.

All my .17hmrs (annies & CZs) shoot 1" or better at 100 yds. & I never checked or sorted ammo. G'hogs don't know the difference. :)

I found that the Winchester and Federal ammo that I shoot do not have enough variation in rim thickness to warrant sorting by rim thickness. There may be other checks that others do but that is as much as I have ever tried. Slim

I can't speak for Winchester ammo because I don't use it. But if you use quality Match Ammo, you should not need to do all those things like rim thickness or weight variations. Thats what you are are paying the big bucks for when you buy top quality ammo. I shoot in local club competitions and see some of the guys with their Hall, Turbo, Rem 40X , Sako's and all sorts of other rigs with their rimfire ammo all neatly measured out. I use mostly Federal Ultra Match UM22, Lapua CenterX and Midas + and occasionly weigh my rounds, but quit doing that rim thickness measurement several months ago as I've found it was a waste of time and my rifle was still outshooting the others with the carefully measured rounds.
