Am I measuring groups right?

If your target's lines are really 1" square, you would be close. We see you are attempting to measure outside edge to outside edge and subtracting .308. However your yellow line doesn't really go to the edges. AND, bullet holes are almost always smaller than nominal bullet diameter. You should measure from the true outer edge of the hole and then subtract TRUE bullet hole size as it appears on that paper. Otherwise, measure center to center.

Better Solution?

Use On Target software.

Get it HERE: https://ontargetshooting.com/

Just place the circles around each shot. Then the program will automatically calculate group size, measurement in MOA or mils, and distance to aimpoint.

I have tested On Target results against actual certified measurements, and it is normally accurate within about three hundredths of an inch (.03"). That is still more accurate than most measurements, particularly on the internet, where guys typically fib by a tenth or more.

Always measure center to center, bullet holes are almost always Smaller than bullet diameter,if you measure, outside to inside/Or outside to outside, and subtract actual bullet diameter, groups will always be smaller than they actually are.Using Fisherman's ruler will always make you Look Better

Set caliper to bullet diameter, then zero caliper. Now open caliper to outside to outside edges. Bullet diameter is already removed.
Best way to set caliper is on a bullet.

Editor: This is fast. That's good. But in most paper, the bullet hole is actually smaller than the bullet diameter. So above method will normally UNDER estimate the true group size.

cool beans. thanks!

edit: took calipers to the paper. On the grayish edges where you can see the edge better than in the picture, it was

0.753" group
0.446" - .307 measured bullet
0.426 moa

That number is exciting for a new gun.

Appreciate the help.

That's why it is always best to put at least ONE round out of the group so's you can measure a single, clean hole. :p

After reading this thread, I decided to download OnTarget DS version 6.9. Took one of my targets and scanned it in. Directions are scarce but I managed to get it to partially work for me. I could not find a way to print the target along with the data so I just printed both out and cut and pasted it together.

The question is what do all this data mean to me. I am old and don't cotton to new ideas easily.2019-04-26_170147 copy2.jpg

Can one of you explain what the data in my last post is telling me? I am unable to find the definitions for the abbreviations in this program which is why I posted it.
