Am I being unreasonable?

This is a .22RF and this area is covered so not normally visible. It came this way new. I sent the manufacturer these pictures and they said to send it back. It came back with the comment that basically nothing was wrong, it functions correctly. Somehow they thought I was complaining about the pins. The manufacturer said they would replace it if I was unhappy. This area is part of the serialized "rifle" which is why, I assume, they didn't replace the part in the first place. I'm assuming if they replace it I'd have to go through an FFL and pay for the transfer.

What are your thoughts?

Not sure what they were trying to do, but they did it wrong! Indeed, tell us more!

A manufacturer is allowed by federal law to return your firearm or a replacement firearm, although some do insist on going through a dealer.

Are those rivits holding the barrel to action? The pitting looks like a bad sand casting.
Care to mention the manufacturer?

I don't know how they did it or how it slipped past QC. (Really don't want to mention the Mfg.) The pins hold the barrel in place (top of the picture). The guy setting the pins was a really bad shot (no pun intended), the surface they laid the piece on was full of chips, the raw stock steel was really rough or........... Don't know.

The guy must have had a bad hangover. He beat the thing to death. Or they were having trouble with them coming loose and instructed them to be set deeper. Crazy what you can find inside a new gun.

As stated unless the law has changed in recent years you can send a firearm to a Manufacture for REPAIR/REPLACEMENT and it can be shipped back to you NO FFL involved

Good Luck

Jim

Why post this? If they said that they would replace it, just send it back. A mfg. or FFL holder can send it directly back to you.

Butch,
I wasn't sure if I was being too picky. That's all. Just looking for others' opinions. I sent them an email to go ahead with the replacement.

Is that one of those Brazilian made Mossbergs? I'd never put my name on them. Machining and finish looking like they were made in some grungy outdoor third world hammer shop.

I recognize that 3 pin barrel attachment. I can assure everyone that the manufacturer is American, and though their price ranges from about $250 to $400 depending on the model, most people do not consider them "cheap" rifles.

That part of the receiver is cast from a low quality alloy, and is either powder coated or painted with an "industrial" type spray paint (and I think it's just painted). So what you are seeing is mostly a combination of a poor casting, a poor coating and poor assembly practices. Fortunately, I suppose, it is hidden under a finely fitted and finished metal covering. And to be completely honest, mechanically the poor appearance has no affect on the function, reliability or durability of the rifle.

What would concern me is that, if I read your original post correctly, you have already returned it to the manufacturer once and they sent it back with a note saying they could not find anything wrong with it. If they didn't see anything wrong with that one then I wouldn't hold out high hopes that a replacement would be a whole lot better. Maybe the best bet is to not take the cover off the replacement and just tell yourself it's a lot better.

Dan

Why are you guys afraid to name the manufacturer? If they're willing to send it out, and willing to stand behind it as acceptable, why can't you say their name? You haven't passed judgement or declared it unsafe, or said their practices were unfair or deceptive. Let the rest of us know, please.
