Aluminum vs Steel Rings and Bases???

What do you use and what are your experiences???

Are there any guidlines to follow when choosing the material?

Seekins Precision mounts here,7075 T6 aluminum). If you break it, you have worse things to worry about. You can't even strip the threads, let alone break anything. The large grade 8 screws will snap before the threads are damaged...and these screw are MUCH beefier than all the others out there.

If you must have steel, Badger Ordnance can not be beat.

Thanks for the info.

I have read some reviews from guys saying something like "I wish it were steel..." and wasn't sure if the aluminum didn't hold up.

Thanks

While on a hunt, a friend forgot that his high dollar carbon fiber stocked,Manners) 7mmWSM was leaning against the front of his hood, and drove over the rifle lengthwise with a full sized PU. After the tire tracks were wiped off the only it was only off by a half inch of windage, which turned out to be because the turret knob had been turned by that amount. The knobs had been zeroed, so it was easy to see. It has Seekins rings, lapped with a Kokopelli kit. They are light, very strong, and extremely well made. Just remember that unless you special order them, the cross bar that locks into the base is too wide for a Weaver base slot. It is designed for a Picatinny base. Steel is only heavier...and harder to lap. You are lapping your rings aren't you? If you are not, and you aren't using a ring that has inserts like the Burris Signature have, you are not doing your scope mounting correctly. No matter how high priced the rings, even with a one piece base, I have never seen rings that were in perfect alignment, and perfectly round after being fully tightened to a base.

So far...

I am leaning towards the Burris Extreme Tactical Picatinny-style 30mm rings. It looks like the "high" 3/4" rise will be more than enough clearance. But I will revisit this after I decide on a base.

Still undecided on a base, I do want a one piece base. Just seems more stable. Look towards either Nightforce 20 moa base or possibly ???

After all the comments on Seekins Precision mounts I will look into them as well. Seems like a lot of people are having good experiences with it.

I also have a scope lapping kit on my shopping list.

Cheers
