Was starting to load up some 6x45's tonite. Using a rcbs chargemaster , I calibrated it punched in my charge weight (27.3 gr 8208) and started dispensing. Humm case filled 3/4 way up neck that's not right. Try it again, same thing. What the heck! Recalibrate machine and try again, same thing
THEN I SEE THE PROBLEM I WAS DISPENSING VARGET AND NOT 8208. I GRABBED THE WRONG BOTTLE OFF THE SHELF. I don't even see varget listed for the 6x45 and it definitely would of been a compressed load. DOUBLE CHECK YOURSELF EVERY STEP--- IS MY NEW MOTTO!

People have died this way. People folks on this board know (knew.)

I'm not being morbid, in fact I'm agreeing with you :)

Yep every time I pick up the powder I want to use I look at it and ask myself the question out loud and answer myself out loud is this the powder I use for this cartridge.

Wake up call. We all need a reminder occasionally. Some more than others (at my age).
Thanks,
Glenn

I accidentally loaded 73gr of IMR 4198 behind a 225gr Nosler Partition in a 358 Norma Magnum many years ago. Rifle was built on an old Ruger M77 tang action with a #5 contour Lilja barrel. I fired the first round for load testing and nothing felt out of the ordinary. Definitely some heavy recoil, but the rifle kicked really hard with everything. I thought my chronograph gave a bad reading when it displayed 3278 fps. Figured I'd forget that reading and see what speed the next one showed. The bolt would not open. Completely seized up. Had to get it back to the shop and beat the bolt open with a rawhide mallet. Then completely ruined a cleaning rod beating the case out of the chamber. I realized what I had done after investigating. Couldnt believe there was zero damage to the barrel, action, or bolt face. Those old Rugers are some tough critters. May have lost my eyes or perhaps even my life with a weaker action ;)

Had a customer that came in and always listened at the conversations in my shop on Saturdays. Load data, BC's, quantifying mirage - blah blah. Only one or two of those boys know what they are talking about. Anyway, he bought an action from me and proceeded to make a custom 6.5 Creed. First time out with his own hand loads he brought the bolt to me with a piece of brass damn near welded to it. Me and a another knowledgeable guy carefully removed the brass. 6.5 Creedmoor was etched on the bolt face. Primer evaporated. Asked him what the load was - reply 40zillion gr. of varget. Asked him where he came up with that and he just pointed to his head. Watch what you say around new guys and/or dummies. Here is a pic of the case -

The 1964 NRA National Rifle Champion loaded a few rounds of 308 Win ammo with a new Winchester ball powder to test in the Win 70 rifle he won with. He was alone on the range the next day up in the Colorado mountains southwest of Denver in early summer, mid 1980's 20 some years after winning the nationals.

His first round fired blew the receiver apart along with the stock. Metal chards went into his face and right hand severy injuring him. He was able to drive several miles to a hospital emergency room for treatment.

The next day in his shop, he noticed the canister of powder used was still by the powder measure. It was pistol powder about as fast as Bullseye. He was then a gunsmith in Denver. When he won the nationals, he was a field rep for Remington firearms

I just took apart a Savage 7-08 rifle for a friend that an "expert" had blown up apparently using a pistol powder. You couldn't get enough of a proper powder in the case to do what that did. I have to give Savage a well done though. All the pressure went down thru the mag well (blew the stock in 2 ) That's a good design. In your case, Varget was easy to see. Glad you caught it.

That case looks good compared to the 7-08 case. I would guess 100 k pressure.
