alliant reloader powders

Which of the reloader powders are single base and which are double base I understand that the double base powders are a little harder on barrels and I was wondering why that is so? In reloading for the 6.5 large capacity cartridges I would like to use the easiest on my barrels! Thank You,RW

I am quite certain>>>just shy of being positive, that they are ALL double based... Although the Nitro content is small compared to VV N500 series powders... Someone who has the breakdown should be able to chime in and let us know....

I've used double base powders for years and have not noticed any more wear than with single base powders. Double base powders aren't going to cause anymore barrel wear than any other powder, given the same pressure and burning rate. Their performance in some of my rifles, far outweighs any concerns about barrel life. The content of Nitro Glycerin makes many think it causes hotter temperatures and therefore less barrel life.

I swear I read somewhere that the 100 series are single-based while the 500 series are double-based.

You are correct... The N100 series are single based and the N500 series are double based with more than 50pct of the "solution" if you will, being Nitro... I believe the Alliant powders are in the vicinity of 15-20 pct...

I agree with both LCazador and ShootDots above......
As to Double-base causing more/faster barrel erosion, it is my input that is nothing more then an "internet myth" and a very misleading assumption at best.

Personally I see the benefits to the addition of nitroglycerin (double-base) where to say: if you have nearly equal burning powders, and one is a Single-base and the other is a Double-base, it will take less of the Double-base to achieve the same velocity, do to its addition of nitroglycerin (energy booster). From which, the less powder burned, the less possibilities of erosion.
