All for one and onr for all......

Rifle that is. Lets have your opinions guys. I want to build ONE rifle to do it all. Ah the age old question. It can be done,I know it can. Right? Why not? Lets do it. It has to be capable of taking eastern Whitetail, western Mulies,Black Bear & Elk. It will wear quality glass and wildcats are definately welcome. I have at my disposal both Remington and Winchester actions to build on. Stainless, blued, standard and magnum. Let er rip. ONE be all end all no holds barred build.

Just as a hunting rig? 20-22" barrel in 6.5 Swede on your Winchester action. Done.

Wayne

ETA: I was thinking it would be cool to have a hunting rig that would basically be like CZ's 550 FS but it'd be a custom on your Winchester.

One rifle to do it all, I'll vote 30-06. The venerable caliber is easy to load for with bullet weights from 125-210 grains and some I missed. It will dump anything in the lower 48 and at long range also. Bullet selection is multiple in 30 cal. Heck might as well Ackley Improve it. ;D

I think the 6.5x55 is a super cartridge but it is not my only hunting rifle.

If I could own only one, according to your criteria, it would be the .30-06, stainless barrel.

One of the many reasons I would go with the ought-six, if you lose, forget, use up your ammo while on a hunt, you can find .30-06 anywhere in North America. With a wildcat or a less popular cartridge, your hunt would probably be finished.

You know, the old otter6 is one of the reasons I decided to head off on this tangent. I've owned a bunch of rifles over the years. from the 300 RUM and 338 Winchester,to the .223. I recently saved up my revenue from pistol instruction, and bought another M70 Stainless Classic in 7 Rem Mag. Paid too much for it,but I'm a sucker for the M70 Classic controlled feed action. Anyway, after much number crunching I came to realize that my old 30/06 M70 Stainless Classic had the big 7 Remmy beat with the heaver bullets. Before I bought the 7 Rem,I was considering a re-barrel and McMillan stock for another action I have here. I should have went ahead and done it. Now I have a 7Remmy mag here that I'm really not very impressed with. Not to mention a big hole in the fun money pile! I'm not a short mag kind of fella, and have several long actions here to work from. So I want to put together something I can dial in with a couple different hand loads and concentrate on hunting for a change. I have a BDL 300 Ultra Mag here that is a real honey, but I just feel silly pointing it at PA whitetails. It is effective that's for sure! The last 8 pointer I pointed it at pulled it's legs up and bounced when it hit the ground. It's hard to beat on paper,or on game for that matter. I'm just not sure I want to make it my one and only.

I feel your pain 300 Ultra. I live in Pa. also, and have about 3 too many deer rifles. I also own a .300 Ultra on a Rem. 700, a Win. 70 Classic Stainless B.O.S.S. in 7 Mag which is a very accurate rifle but hard on the ears out in the field, I still have a special place in my heart for my Pre 64 30-06 Win 70 made in 1954. ( My fathers) A riflemans rifle that just feels really good. :) Its the one I grab when I know I am not going to trash it when hunting. (Stand hunting only) I strictly shoot 165 class bullets in it. Hell of a rifle! I also am not a short mag person, I like those long actions.

ultra,

I built such a rifle, and it does it all, a 700bdk, hitech stock, Hart #4 bbl 26" trued, 2 3/4#trigger, 280 AI , using R/p brass, 9 1/2 primers 58.6gr h4350, or 60.2 h4831 it shoots 140 nosler Bt / Sierra 140sbt at 3140fps .
Built two of these - one for me and one for son, R. W Hart did both, and the groups are consistant .300-.400 at 100
For elk just go to the 150 partition etc and the velocity is 3050.

I would probably rig up a 284 Winchester, load it right and it will do anything you'll ever need it to do...

bheadboy; I hear you brother. I had a 280 Ruger 77V years ago,and it left me with a soft spot for the 280. A 280 A.I. has been a dream of mine for some time since. I think it was back about '83 that I had the 280V. I have been trying to get a gunsmith buddy of mine to do me up a 280 AI, he's burried in work at present.

40XGuy; Sounds like you and I are cut from the same cloth. This 7 R. Mag I picked up just isn't getting it done. I know some of them are real hummers, but alas this one isn't. I guess I needed a lesson in frivilous spending. I've done the over the counter rifle thing to death. It's time for a quality build. I used to shoot BR. 2 oz triggers and 36X scopes has left me wanting a fine hunting rifle. You take care of that old Winchester. I let a 50s vintage 721 30/06 go that I have regreted since. Wish I had it back.

i'm a 7 mm fan have 5rifles of different types but my go to always seems to be my 7 mm stw hits hard enough to stop any thing i will come a cross up here north of the 49th

Just my .02. If your confident then all that is needed is a 30-06. It can kill anything in the lower 48 within a reasonable range. If you got "little guy" syndrome then you may need a bigger rifle on some sort. BUT lets face it guys if we only "needed" on rifle this forum would not be here ;D.

Horseman that a fine looking rifle, even if the bolt is on the wrong side. ;) How about telling us about it.

Haha, I noticed that as well. I was really studying that shooting fixture, at least it looks like it's a shooting fixture.

Horseman, that is a fine looking rifle, give us some specifics. :)

300 Ultra, don't worry, that Pre 64 isn't going anywhere except handed down the line to my son. Let us know what you decide.

Frank

That is a nice Savage Horsemen.

I've started looking up some semi-local gunsmiths. I have a buddy that is a crackerjack smith, but he's not taking on as much work as he used to. Checking to see who has what reamers, and price of course. Anyone that has a smith here in western PA that they would endorse I would be glad to add him to the list. I need to get a tally started to see what kind of sale I will have to have :o.

300Ultra,

All my hunting rifles and many BR and Sil guns are built by R. W. Hart in Nescopeck Pa.

Wally and Bobby, his son, run one of the best shops you can find. They took, 700bdl, and 40x, and xp i picked up and built 22-250 that shoots in the .1's, a 300wm that shoots .3's, 280AI that shoots .3's, 221fb that shoots .2's, 222r that shoots .15's, 7br xp that shoots .87 at 200m and i have them building a 7-08Ai right now.

you will not be disappointed if you use the, tell them Bob Browne said hello.

Hey thanks for the link Bob. I had a 6PPC that knew it's way to the moth ball. I picked it up used, but it was Hart barreled and triggered. Very respected folks in the BR business. I'll definately get an inquiry out to them regarding my latest obsession.

I am trying to do the same thing as you. The caliber I chose is the 260imp. It has the same ballistics as a 6.5x284 with three times the barrel life.

Ollie, dont get too quick on the 260AI, if you check most of the velocities you hear are from long, very long bbl with slow powders,

Going to a hunting rifle, 24/26 in bbl you do not get the velocity claimed and if you push to get close, the accurcy drops off. it is the only AI round i have had bad luck with - my suggestion is stay away. if you want 6.5 choose another case.
