ALL AROUND ACCURACY LOAD ?

I think I already know the answer but have heard in the past it was possible. I wanted to see other opinions on this. Is it possible to find a load for any given rifle or caliber that will shoot accurately in all climate and temp changes without the help of a tuner of some sort ?

I found a load for my savage bvss 22-250 using Berger bullets and imr 4064 that shoots small groups almost every time I’ve shot it and I’ve been using that load with the same rifle for around 18 years but with that said I shoot that rifle maybe 3 times a year about 50 rounds each time so I can’t say with 100 percent certainty it would not ever change but I’ve always been happy with it. I’ve tried a lot of different powders over the years for that rifle but 4064 always was just a little more accurate. The throat is gone on that barrel and I’m going to rebarrel it at some point it will be interesting to see if that same load works with the new barrel or not.

Well, I hesitate to answer this. But, when I only shot the 6PPCs in IBS and groundhog shoots I shot very hot loads. I never played with the load after the initial work up and did pretty well. I always figured the way I loaded, where could I go. I guess I did ok this way by putting a lot of emphasis on bench manners and flags which I think gets talked about more than it gets worked at. I have some other thought best kept to myself, lol.

I think you typed that "h" by accident and were quoting their IMR 4064 comments.

I'm not aware they ever had any significant amounts of experimental versions of 4064 with respect to their Enduron, Extreme, or temp stable versions. There were some non-canister versions in that speed range that were modified to be temp stable, but nothing called H4064 that I recall.

The IMR4064 will certainly go up and down with temperature, but the tune windows on those pet loads were very forgiving and really wide when compared to lots of other rigs.

I tend to like H4350 for the above reasons. If it is happy in a pet load, then that one will tend to hold against wider than average weather changes when compared to other rigs.

I have an old tang safety Ruger 77V in 220 Swift that I bought off a New Mexico cowboy back in the 80’s. He had the barrel shortened to 20”. it shot wonderfully till I wore out the throat. I had the barrel replaced with a thinner contour Douglas barrel, also 20” long. The exact same load shot tiny groups in both barrels. It was a near max load of IMR 4064.

IMHO if you take any of the published govt loads, change out the fmj bullet for a better bullet and a better case and then shoot it in a decent modern rifle you will have decent accuracy over a temp span.

I’ve shot 33.1g of RL-15 with 105g Berger VLDs in my dasher and shot clean winning rounds at 600 yards in 10F and 95F. Same load

I have so many “better” dasher bullets (ie Berger 105g hybrids, Barts 105g hammers and Barts 105g gungnirs) but these damn 105g old school VLDs just keep hammering and they are so forgiving with regard to temperature and throat erosion.

I find sticking with the lower node and a big jump like 100-150k is pretty much guaranteed to work somewhat well

What caliber and what discipline of shooting? The most consistent you can get is a 308 and that's been said already. There is no such thing as an all around load if you expect decent accuracy. Minute of "pie plate" yeah you'll find it. My 308 is about as consistent as it gets holds two hours of wind with + or - minus one tenth grain loads!

i think we all know on a good good guys have hit further

Hmmm never tried it but that is an interesting theory. I’ve always found my best accuracy around 6-10 thou into the lands.
