AICS magazines for the BR family???

Is anyone out there building a 4 or 5 round AICS style magazine for the BR family? Had a couple of rifles built in a BRA using Atlas actions and Hawkins bottom metal and having feeding problems with one of the magazines. The 12 round MGT works great but it's too much sticking out of the rifle for what I need. Tried a standard 308 5rd and one of the two I bought kinda works in both rifles but the other won't. Just wondering before I try and shorten the 12rd that works well, thanks for any help, John

Takes some tweaking (feedlips/spacers/springs) or a magazine kit. Most of the kits are for 10rd magazines, but you could customize. I have a polymer magpul magazine thats very reliable. I did some filing, sanding and buffing on it.

Thank you for the reply, I ordered a lip tool from H&S thinking to do just that, but after comparison between the two 308 mags, one of which works, the lips are identical. After taking them apart and measuring the springs I found the bottom flat of the spring in the mag that didn't work to be shorter than the one that did, allowing the shell to tilt down rather than up and reforming the spring is above my pay grade. The 12 round MDT is perfect and works well, I just was wondering if anyone was making a good shorter one yet, thanks John

Also measure the feedlip lengths and how high the round sits up in the magazine (proud) and the angle of the round as it's presented. Magazine latch height also plays into the feeding, we have had to file and/or build up magazine latches in years past. I would start with a kit, get it 100%, then try to duplicate your results on another one.

There are AW magazine kits/mods too. They fit the double stack AW magazines and are smaller overall. However your action/stock need to be cut for AW magazines.

It's all very custom :) You and I might have all the same stuff, but have different results. It might take some patience, beer and swear-words to get it reliable.

In my experience the genuine AI 5 round will almost always work flawlessly as is where the 10 round have been hit and miss. I have also had good luck with 5 round Magpul (can take apart and cut a piece of the follower to make a 6 round). I have gotten every kind of mag to work in my rifles feeding a dasher but some have taken quite a bit of time to tweak. I have even used AW without any spacers. The MDT, some have worked without any modification and some needed to be tweaked. The biggest headaches for me have been accurate mag AI knockoffs. I don't know where the difference is between them and the genuine AI but it's something.

I used the MDT mag with an Atlas action (and an MDT chassis) this afternoon with some 30 Br rounds and it worked great. If you try an MDT mag and if it doesn't work out for you, I will buy the mag from you and pay for shipping.

I have one of the older poly AI mags for the. 223 rounds. A little lip work and it is great for the BR or Dasher rounds. This is the only mag I have that always feeds flawlessly. Good luck!

My MDT 12 round mags (2) are both finicky running 12 rounds and never run without a hiccup. With 10 rounds in them, if you are smacking the mag as you load the 10 rounds and they seat all the way to the rear, they will run without issue. It seems that the front part of the spring under the follower is weak, spongy feeling. I may be able to tweak the font of the lips a little and have them run more reliable.

Now where to go to buy a lip tool?
