Age limits on buying ammo?

A friend(70+ years old) recently purchased some factory ammo at a Cabela's in SD. The clerk asked for ID stating that he was checking above 18 for rifle ammo and under 80.?

WTF? Is there some group out there trying to restrict seniors from shooting? Or just an idiot clerk being Stoopid.

Store policies. That’s one other area I disagree with many in the republican camp at this time. Government kills small business then helps large multi nationals then the multi nationals employ or effect every one so they set policy instead of government. Walmart does not sell ammo to anyone below 21. I think there may be a law suite. 18 is old enough to go to war for the rich owners of oil companies but not old enough to buy ammo for yourself. Rich people dude...

I watched a WW2 vet get carded buying beer while I lived in TN. I laughed out loud, the boy running the register said it was some policy or new law, that everyone was to get ID. I told him he was clearly over 40. The guy buying was in his 90's. WW2 vet hat and all.

We don’t need to think. Just follow policy. No thinking allowed until we can afford a robot to replace you. Lol

Years ago, I bought and paid for a shotgun at Dick's and was put on a hold. Didn't hear anything so three days later went back to pick up the gun. No can do. We won't release it until the feds call back. What about the three day rule?
We don't observe that. It's corporate policy, no call, no gun. Finally was able to collar someone in management with half a brain who discovered the feds called back the next day (I bought it late on a Sunday night). Other than paintball gun cylinder refills, last time I bought anything from Dick's. If anyone thinks they're going to fight these corporate behemoths, I have an oceanfront condo in Iowa for sale.

Federal law prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from buying handguns or handgun ammo.

In Illinois must be 21 or older to purchase handgun ammo. This includes .22 rimfire since it can be used in rifle or pistol.
Shhhh...Don't tell them about XP100s or T/C pistol chamberings.

The “Oil Companies” Don’t have anything to do with this. - The “owners” are the share-holders of these companies. And a good part of those senior executives are very pro-gun. - The “law makers” are the ones who make these rules/laws and the oil companies are Not focused on these laws when it comes to lobbying. They are focused on regulations related to the industry in specific and acreage for exploration.

You guys are missing the point. The OP said the store would not sell ammo to someone 80 or older. What's next drivers and hunting licenses? dedogs
No, I didn't miss the point I just felt that someone needed to point out what the federal law is since the conversation was wandering all over.

My comment was in error so I corrected it.

Took the wife shopping on Saturday morning. Young girl at the register asked if we were older that 65 to get a senior discount? I replied that I was WAY past that and old enough to be her Great Grandpa. Her reply was :I need a yes or no answer. Some people.:(
