African game

My dream hunt would be
1) Africa
2) 22-250
3) Endless supply of monkeys

I hunted in Zeerust NW this winter, Koedoe and Impala was on the menu. Around 12.30 when it was getting hot I took up cover under n big bush overlooking a drinking spot. within 45min there were close to 200 vervet monkeys around me, some 15yards in front of me. At one point they were lined up 20 deep sitting in a row picking stuff of each other 50y from me. I had a 215gr Hybrid up the pipe and was itching to see what would happen if they connected. Biggest problem was I was trying to "nurce"the area to give the koedoe a chanse to come in later, luckily I left them alone and found my koedoe 5hours later around the same spot.

Some more pics,
1: a ferry on the lake (max depth 515 ft., 181 miles long) carrying many people, two motorcycles, a load of dried fish and a couple dogs; life expectancy if capsized, more for those drowning, less if able to swim.

2: a puff adder squashed on the dirt road leading to our camp,

3: the Stars and Stripes flying over the sleeping quarters.
Okay you got this Texas boys curoisity! Piranhas, snakes.?, or man eating lions on shore.

Did you hook into any big Tiger fish. I went to SA in June and appreciated your tips before I left, it was a great trip.

The big tiger fish were no shows. Largest was around 12 pounds. The water in the lake looked to be down around 40 feet. Crocs were seen everywhere.

The area I hunted is devoid of any lions and most of the other big cats but snakes were starting to come out of their dens. Saw just one puff adder road kill. No pirahnas as they're native to South America. The water in the lake looked to be down around 40 feet. Crocs were seen everywhere. A hundred or so go missing each year to crocodiles. No jetskis or water skiing to be seen anywhere. :D

I like fishing as much as hunting and a big Tiger is on the list, maybe someday.
Sounds like you had another good trip though

Didn’t know Crocodiles were in Africa, hope they keep the Baboon population in check.

For tigerfish, I'd try another venue than Cahora Bassa. The natives are using gill nets and putting a large dent in the fish stocks in the lake. Talked to another group that fished the river below the dam and they said it was the same thing.

Plenty of them in this lake. We called this crocodile rock since there were always two on the rocks sunning themselves. Don't know about the baboons but they do their part to keep the human population in check.

That was a very nice African plains hunting trip hog patrol. Thanks for sharing the story and pictures with us. Love the vast open spaces, how big of a square mile area would you estimate you hunted there?

One concession is 36,000 acres, a little over 56 square miles. Another is 3500 acres, about 5 1/2 square miles. Most of it is fenced which means nothing to a determined wild animal. I watched over 185 sprinbok find a hole and go under one fence in about ten minutes.
Some concessions in other countries go in to the millions of acres. Can't verify but one I've heard of is 7 million acres or about 11,000 square miles, an area larger than the state of Maryland whose land area covers 9774 square miles.

Up in Africa in places like Zambia, Mozambique, Congo and even Namibie and Zimbabwe there are allot of concession over 200 000 hectare, that's just a bit over 450 000 acres with some much bigger but these places except Namibie are getting dangerous and game numbers are dropping. In South Africa 90% of the places you hunt will be fenced (boundary fence with no fences on the inside) but we have some game farms here over 30 000 hectare or roughly 60 000 acres. On avg the game farms over here are probably 10 000 to 15 000 acres with a couple being over 20 000 and somer around 30 000 acres with the big farms over 30 000, in SA and Nam the game industry is much more a industry than hunting the unspoild africa of old but the places you can hunt wil blow your mind with 5 star luxury

What Capt. says about dangerous is unfortunately true. Many of the countries that hunting was possible just a decade or so ago are now hotbeds of terrorists groups, tribal war areas, criminal poaching gangs and other no man's lands. As a result the animals suffer greatly.
