Aero Solus Issues?

Hey Everyone,

I need an expert or maybe more eyes on this issue I'm having right now. So this past weekend, I shot a PRS match and had some crazy issues with my rifle. It's a 6.5 Creedmoor Aero Solus action in a KRG C4 Chassis. The issue was that I was having a lot of light strikes or misfires, per se. I recently bought 300 rounds of new Lapua brass for the match, and out of the 300, I had 30 duds. The action has about 3k rounds through the action, and this has never happened. It was shooting that brass and load perfectly fine. I had about 150 rounds of Lapua that had no issues, and then it started to have its hiccups. The primers were CCI 450s. It also happened again later on with different brass entirely. I had a misfire with Peterson LRP brass and had the same indent like the lapua with CCI 200 primers. I compared it to factory ammo like Hornady and Federal and had no issues with those. So I'm kinda stumped on if this is a reloader error or this is an actual mechanical error and I might be out of a rifle for a bit. I added a photo of the rounds that I shot and had issues with. I circled in blue the misfires. From left to right, it's Federal, Peterson, and Lapua brass. If there's any information about this, I'd love to know about it.

Thanks Y'all

It looks like one of two things, or a combination of both:

1. Excessive headspace (your brass is too short for the chamber), and/or,
2. A sacked firing pin spring.

I'd check the sizing die setup and replace the firing pin spring.

Idk if it would be headspace, both the Lapua and Peterson were brand new out of the box so virgin brass. And my sizing die is set up to be about 15 thousandths off the lands.....

If I could add one other possibility to @JLT list.

If the primer wasn't fully seated it could cause a misfire.
Maybe? Idk I use a Lee Precison universal hand primer tool and I make sure its fully flushed to the casing. It might be that but I feel I would've noticed the misseating.

Pull your bolt apart and inspect. Look up inside where the ring prior to the firing pin seats to see if there is crud. Also check the face of that ring. If you had pierced primers or run a suppressor there could be a bit of something there.

I looked and didn't see anything. I wiped down my firing pin earlier today so I might've cleaned it out. But, it doesn't cover the Peterson brass misfire bc I wiped it and then shot the Peterson.

I mention that as a possibility because of the Lapua case (not a misfire) on the far right, where the primer has been pushed back around the firing pin and the primer itself looks to be proud of the base. Excessive headspace (brass too short) will cause that. You also have inconsistent primer indentations.

I looked at the pictures again zoomed in, and I'd bet a carload of fine bourbon that you firing pin spring is sacked. Replace the spring and I'll bet the problem goes away. Among the rounds that fired, one can see where the firing pin was pushed back by the primer cup after ignition.

Yeah, I've been running these loads a bit hot for the lapua. I checked length the brass and they were SAAMI spec when I initially got them. If it is a spring issue... I hope Aero can send me a new one pronto.

Thanks for the help y'all. I thought I was the issue and screwed up my reloading process.

i just had some new 6br lapua do that.. the problem is the shoulder is sized back to far and the firing pin pushes the brass ahead in the chamber instead of just hitting the primer and igniting it. i fixed that by seating the bullets in the lands so the firing pin wont be able to move the brass. once i did this the ones that didnt fire all fired and i got normal primer dents. after first firing or so your brass should have expanded the shoulder so you can load how you want.

This. Primers need to be seated to the bottom of the pocket, not just flush or below. These two things in combination almost always guarantees a misfire. Good luck and keep us posted.
