Aero Precision Ar-10 .308 cal. barrel with 22 inch or 24 inch long with 1:10 or 1:8 twist

just too much stuff that aint true in this post. just ("poor") opinion.
the swiss k31 is the peak of mil issued bolt rifles.
there are claims of 308 mn's but in over 20 years of owning selling competing I have NEVER SEEN ONE.
AND YES I OWN A 28-30...the spec is 309 not 308.
lots of real production 308 win rifles have been made in 12 and 11.xx twists. the trend to day is a 10.
my armalite ar10(t) 24" is a 1/11.xx
pretty sure this dates back to thinking a 168 was the perfect bullet for 308, which it aint.
opinion by a guy that owns several mosin nagant rifles, swiss k31 and 4 ar10's. shooting and winning matches for fun.

Some basic physics apply in this discussion . The OP is asking about a AR-10 . A .308 caliber . Pretty well accepted that for most applications , a 1-10 twist barrel is more than sufficient for the majority of bullets used in a .308 , for the majority of comp uses . The reality is that a 1-9 1/2 is actually a better twist rate , but creates other issues . One being cost of mfg. since it isn't a twist rate in common usage . A example is the Finns made their version of the Mosin - Nagant in both a 1-9 and 1-91/2 .308 twist rates , and they are still considered to be one of the most accurate military rifles ever produced . And most highly prized by M-N aficionados . But when have you heard of anyone making a 1-8 twist rate . 308 barrel for any application ? It boils down to diminishing returns . As has been learned by both shooters , and manufacturers decades ago . 1-8 twist rate barrels were designed to keep smaller diameter , lighter bullets stable for longer distances . Physics haven't changed since the AR was created and you have to ask yourself why Gene Stoner created a near perfect combat weapon in .308 to start with ? And the bean-counters , and politicians , and special interests turned it into a "High-powdered" B.B. gun . Think the "KEY" word in the last sentence was "Special interests" . But what do I know ? I'm just a two-tour Nam Vet that can tell you more about that POS than you want to know . Sorry ! Rant over .

Sorry you weren't at the SWN last year Mr. Smith , or you might have seen me shooting my Comp "Open" custom built M-N . Finished second in class , ( Mrks - S.S. ) shooting 199-13x / 197-11x & 184-7x . Got bitten by the famous Ben Avery winds in the third relay as did many others . Please re-read my post for clarification . My reference to the Finn M-N as "one of" the most accurate military weapons ever produced was , and is still a correct statement . "One of" : is far different than a "claim" of "the BEST" . And you may want to check your data regarding your M28 . According to 7.62x54r.net/MosinSpec.htm , the groove diameter of the M28/30 is .3082 per mfg. spec .

But your reference to the 168SMK did make me smile . :)
For those younger than 50 , it a time joke . Ya had to be there .

THAT POSTED "spec" is pure bs. finn spec is 309...
there is an internet rumor of some navy 27's being 308...but no real facts to back it up.
I own and have measured several 28/30's NONE are 308 all are 309plus.
" a custom" does not relate to issued mn's.
I dis agree with the basic statement that ""one of" the most accurate military weapons ever produced was , and is still a correct" most mn's have terrible over sized bores with the tall lands being the only thing that allows them to shoot.
there are a FEW very nice issue factory bbls out there.( out side of finns, separate catagory) 1843 was a good year. late production saw little to no use. I have some like new bright shiney square edge lands. how does .358" at 100 yards sound ? Hornady 150 hunting bullet, or .516 with a 308 168 ? but the best was the sie 174 312 which shot....wait for it.....0.257 at 100 yards. but by no means average or common nor "one of the best". .
