You have a good "supply" of your medium range rifles. However, there is one missing that I believe is one of the finest medium range cartridges that can, in a pinch, be used for long range. It is a .260 A.I. with a 1-8 and a reamer with a freebore of at least .160. That will give you all the flexibility for the 130's thru the 140 class bullets. It is a very accurate round, rivaling any 6mm for accuracy with a hefty dose of increased B.C. to boot!

7.5 Swiss! I've had this fantasy about building a rifle around a K31 action for awhile. The challenge would be finding a gunsmith that's willing/able to rebarrel a K31.

The Dasher will take care of the first 3 categories with one rifle...it's fairly cheap to shoot, take a little velocity ogff and it has great case life, easy to make it shoot consistently, mild recoil, cheap bullets in 6mm on and on...check out the Dasher !!

Have to agree. Have one and absolutely love it.

Edorsey -

Howdy !

Gee.... I'm not sure, yet.
I like to design/form/shoot wildcat cartridges of my own design.
Each design has its own particular attributes.

My first wildcat for use on groundhogs and for target work was
.35 Remington necked-down to .224" cal. It was/is a superb wildcat, and met my shooting needs & expectations.

My current wildcat is " DEEP 6 ", the chamber for which is cut by running a 6mm Remington reamer in "short", for a nominal .466" base diam. It utilizes 7 X 64 Brenneke brass.

For a stock rifle case, I really like .35 Rem ( shot from my Marlin
M-336 XLR ).

This. You have a great "spread" of rifles. Change your focus to a new arena of competition. Old military guns. Opens up a whole new world!
1903, Garand, M1A, Swedes, Nagants, Mausers, K31 etc.:)

Is the short range for score or group matches? Big difference.

If for group 6ppc or 22ppc-.100" short.

If for IBS score 30br.

If for UBR either of the 3 will work.

Being a Palma / Full Bore shooter we must shoot .308. from 300 - 1000 yards
with a 30-32 in. barrel and all the great bullets today ! it is Fun
Note : long barrel life easy to load for !

Best of Luck

My best shooting rifle for short range score is a 30 Major. It's a 6.5 Grendel necked up to 30 cal.

I used to shoot N120. Lately, I've been shooting LT-32. Just cram in as much as you can cram in and go shoot dots. I have a quantity of LT-30 to try. Should be great. Just need to find time to go to the range.

Me too, Greg..or it has been for a long time, anyway. I'm anxious to get started playing with the new toy, though. I'm gonna spec a 6 grendel reamer for short range br, too. It just makes way too much sense and should shoot great. I see no reason why it can't equal the ppc in accuracy and have the benefits of making those 30+ grain charges of n133 much easier.. and the brass is basically already formed. It'll just need necking down, turn the necks and go shoot. Looking forward to trying it out for myself, in a full blown and good bench rifle. You know how I am...I have to prove to myself that something either works or doesn't. I was told for years that my little 30 Major would never work and couldn't keep up with a 30 BR. It does and currently holds the world record for 100 yard 5 shot group...007"! I'd say that it works just fine.;)--Mike Ezell

If you don't have one, build a 30br on a Remington SA with a Jewell trigger, 1:17/1:18 Kreiger barrel. The 30br makes decent shooters look even better. I use 115gr Bergers as the 118 BIB's are next to impossible to get. Randy R. sells them as fast as he makes them and is not taking new buyers last I checked.

I was working with a 30 BRX that was hard to complain about as well.
It functioned nicely in both AR's and Bolt actions. Alex is right about it making shooters look good.

" The challenge would be finding a gunsmith that's willing/able to rebarrel a K31"

Take a look at LPR Gunsmithing. lprgunsmith.com/K31_rifles.htm

What about a sub-caliber, like a .20 Practical or a .20 BR? I'll bet a dozen cold ones that you'll reach for that rifle most frequently. The combination of performance and economy is off the charts, huge fun factor, remarkably easy to get them to shoot tiny groups, long barrel life, all sorts of good stuff. As long as the wind isn't blowing . . . .

Oops - just noticed the .20 PPC on your list. My apologies.
