Advice on using a Hakko scope

I was given a Hakko 8-32x50 AO Blue Ring scope. I am setting up a new .300 Win Mag for elk hunting, wanting the ability to shoot out to long distances if I get the shot. I am researching what scope to put on the new rifle and would really appreciate some advice.

I did find some previous threads talking about Hakko, but from several years ago. Information is scarce on these, but for their day they seem like pretty good scopes.

First, just curious if anybody has any input on whether it would be a good scope for this application.

Second, does anybody happen to know at what zoom power this scope's reticle is accurate? I know that with many scopes, it is only accurate at the highest power, but with this one going all the way to 32x I wonder...?

I plan to save up and purchase a good Vortex PST or something, but for now, this one is the best price - FREE

Potential downsides:
size- this thing is very long and weighs 26oz

maximum elevation adjustment - 40 moa

cheaper brand

To do long range hunting justice, how many shots do you plan to shoot at a variation of distances calibrating the scope and establishing drops and dope for it? Then again other days re-confirming it all?

Suggest to look at how much time, effort, and ammunition expense your going to spend getting that scope up and going to take an ethical shot at an Elk. Then to do it all again when you buy the real scope you want, wouldn't you be better off and time and money ahead to do it right the first time?

Besides, the recoil of a 300WinMag can make short work of scopes, primarily the el-cheap-o's.

Maybe I'm weird.... Good Luck all the same

dmoran, thanks for your input. Short answer - Money. Just dropped $850 on brand new rifle, and it took several months to save that up. Majority of my hunting shot range will be 300 yards or less. I had a chance last year to shoot 450 but wasn't comfortable with my .30-06 out that far. Most of the shots we get where I hunt, you only have a few seconds to get set and shoot. Most of the time, I won't have time to range and spin turrets, it will be a holdover shot. Just want the ability to go longer if needed.
