Advice on .270 Win. Brass

I'm getting started with a new .270 Win. Sako rifle and am considering new brass. I'd like to get top-quality brass and have been seeing Norma, Nosler, and Peterson brass for sale here in Canada (Winchester, Remington, and Hornady are available too).

Is it established fact that Nosler brass is simply Norma brass that has been prepped a little? I don't know whether Norma makes their own brass, but is it the case that whoever makes Norma brass (and head-stamps it accordingly) also makes identical brass for Nosler and head-stamps it for Nosler?
I ask because here in Canada the two lines are about the same price, and so if both are of identical manufacture, the Nosler might be the better deal, with the prepping they provide.

I've used a lot of Norma brass in other cartridges and have generally been satisfied with it.

The other possibility is Peterson, which sells for less than either Norma or Nosler.

A final option is Sako. I have several boxes of loaded Sako ammunition and could just shoot it off to get the brass. Anyone on here have experience with Sako brass?

Any recommendations will be much appreciated.

I believe any of the aforementioned brands of brass will work fine for hunting applications which I presume is the purpose since you're talking about a 270 Win.

I believe a more important issue than the specific brand of brass selected is starting with new brass, preparing it properly and having the tools to properly size it for subsequent reloads which means being able to accurately measure a fire case in your rifle so you can set your full length sizing die for a .001 to .002" shoulder set back.

Monitoring case length is also important and trimming as required. Some preparation steps on new case that a lot of precision shooters perform are deburring the primer flash hole and uniforming primer pockets.

Right. I have the tools and experience to do all that you suggest. And I have good dies--L.E. Wilson bushing neck and FL dies and seater. I just want to start with the best stuff.

I've weighed the Sako brass, and it runs around 190 gr. with primer. Ben Preston at Peterson weighed some of their cases, and they went about 201 gr. with primer. I'd want to avoid overly heavy brass, I think.

If this is a hunting rifle, no NEED to weigh brass. At most keep brands of brass separated, but I do have an AR or 2 and a couple bolt guns that I can mix brass and still shoot under moa at hunting distance (under 400 yards).

Norma don't make Nozler brass. Norma is better !!!! Norma is perfect. Some nozler brass not perfect. Get norma forget problems ! For deer use 85tsx barnes bullet/64 grains R17. For 3900+ fps and 1/2"-3/4" groups. Me like's Canada.

Yes, thanks, Zero333. I had noticed it at X-Reload, but have wondered how good the Peterson brass is (not their Select line, which is probably very good) in ordinary hunting calibers.

I didn't know they had "Select" and standard brass. Now that they been making brass a handful of years I think they're a safe choice.

I'm not sure how long ago they started making 270w brass. Norma is known for being lighter in most cartridges thus get a hair more capacity. At the same time, some loading hot loads in Norma brass report primer pockets loosening fast.

I'm sure if a bad batch of Peterson brass gets out, as long as the customer lets them know they'll make it right.

If you plan on pushing velocities and still wanting many loading cycles from your brass, Peterson would be my choice.
If you don't think you'll be chasing speed, and accuracy is the only concern, maybe Norma might be the better choice ?

I been shooting 270's forever. I don't buy special brass. Always used Winnie or Rem. But I use 30-06 brass and run it through my 270 die. For some reason this brass/ load is the most accurate in both my SAKO 270 and my Win 270.

Whatever floats your boat but I don't believe a game animal will ever know the difference between a case that weighs 190 grains versus one that weighs 201 grains.

Most 270's I've seen (I had one years ago but like an idiot I traded it) shoot easily under 1 moa with premium factory ammo or tailored reloads. It's an excellent hunting caliber with many of long established great loads. The one the worked best for me was IMR 4350 with 130 BT Sierra Spitzers. My Rem 700 shot in the 1/2 moa range.

Of course not. But that's not the point! A case that weighs 190 gr. will accept slightly more powder than will one that weighs 201 gr. The difference is very small, but it exists. To be clear, I'm not hung up on case weight. I'm mainly interested in getting brass that exhibits uniform weight case to case; that's the key to accurate loads. Also, I realize that the 270 Win. is not expected to exhibit benchrest accuracy, but I really enjoy teasing super accuracy from hunting rounds.

hum- im playing with a Rem 700 in 270 right now. ill try that thanks

I wouldn't hesitate a minute to use Peterson brass!
Since they are now making 280 Rem and 7mm-08, that's the route i'm going!

Be aware that necking down 30-06 brass to 270 results on a short case ~2.49". Trim length for 270W is 2.53". Safe to shoot, but leaves a nice little gap for a carbon ring to form.

i always check that but thanks for the info

I've wondered whether you could form .270 Win. brass by running 7x64 Brenneke cases through a .270 Win. FL sizer. The 7x64 is available from Lapua, and this might be a way to get Lapua .270 Win. brass. The 7x64 case is a little longer (2.52") than the .30-06 case, so might be a better bet for .270 if the other dimensions work. Does this make sense?

Both of my .270's have never been picky about the specific brass. I try to mostly run Remington brass since I never could justify the extra cost of the Hornady brass.

Id take nosler brass over norma anyday. Peterson is a step above all of them. In a 270 you could get the sorted nosler brass and never be lacking in the brass dept.

I don't own a 270 but I have some RWS 270 brass stashed in case I should get one.
