Advice, best economical rifle for 1000 yd beginner

Shooting a 300 win mag. Currently. What would be a good gun for 1000 yard. Best caliber

I say this all the time>>> look to buy a used CUSTOM rifle, even if you have to spend just a few dollars more. You will be MUCH BETTER served in going this route. There are MANY, MANY excellent buys on this site.

I might add too that once you have the custom rifle, all you do then is change barrels when necessary. Nothing else to do!

Agree with the post above but if you want a NEW rifle, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal than this new Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creedmoor. Out the box these rifles shoot great. The 2 I've seen and shot were 1200 dollars total out the door. Mount a scope and go shoot. And you can get an upgrade barrel and put it on yourself (if you're handy with tools) when the original gives out.

What discipline? Benchrest, F Open, or steel matches?

Coming from a Savage first timer, I second the used custom rifle. I started with a Savage F Class factory 308 and sure it got me started.... And frustrated!

I basically now have 2 custom rifles built on Savage PTA actions. One for practice and one for comp. The Shillen barreled one is very accurate. They just aren't as smooth as a custom action.

Save a little extra and get a used custom. If you are a die hard DIY'r without a lathe, then the Savage PTA will let you change your own barrels easily if you don't mind prefits from Shillen etc.

I would agree that a used custom gun is the best money spent. Even if it doesn't have a custom action. A Rem 700 action trued properly with a custom barrel and a good bedding job will eliminate a lot of frustrations. Maybe even look for a barreled action and get the stock of your choice.

I baught an older used short range BR rifle with a panda action, jewel trigger and mcmillian stock. I had the bolt face opened up to .308 and a 8 twist hart barrel in 6BR installed. I started with a Leapuld 36 power scope and I eventually upgraded to a night force 15x55 scope. At the last 600 yard F open shoot I shot a 599 36X. I am very happy with my decision. The only thing that I eventually want to change is the stock. You can get an older used BR rifle like this for around $1500 if you are patient. Another $600 for a new barrel and you are in business with good components that won't frustrate you. I also shoot this same rifle at 1000 yard F class with good success. A 6BR is a great cartridge choice also for beginners.

I agree with all said. Only my recommendation would add that I'd recommend a standard chamber until you've got plenty of reloading experience.. I too would recommend a 6.5 creedmoor.

Listen to what Shootdots is saying. He's right, unless ya want to build a collection. With a good custom action and stock, your next "new gun" is the cost of a barrel. 6br, 6xc, 6Dasher, 6.5 creedmore, .308, .260, 6.5x47. All use the same bolt face.

I have 5 dashers 2 on custom actions. 3 on savage actions . 2 with red blades one with evolution trigger. The most accurate is a red blade pta action on pillers un bedded. The stock has rail's 6'' foward of of the forend and rail on butt end. The bolt I rework and it solved the trigger problem. It holds the gun club records at 300 and 600 yards. It has won many of 600 yard and1000yard matches. Pta savage action and a good tracking stock isn't a bad choice. Rework bolt cures much of savage trigger problems. Larry

Came on the forum with the same ?. Wife will shoot a 6 creed all day, but did not like the 6.5-284, so am in the hunt for a rifle for her.

Daughter is 11 and the 6 caliber maybe the best for her, I dont think an FTR in 308 kicks less.

Larry, Can you elaborate just a bit for us what you are doing to the bolts on the PTA. Also are you using three pillars or just 2 (front and rear). Thanks

Larrry, I'm also interested in the bolt work needed for the PTA. I think I know what to do but I don't want to go to far and have to buy new parts.

I presently have my first custom gun on sale in the other section, I have shot many F-TR matches at 300, 600 and 1,000 yards.

It is on a Eliseo chassis so you can use it in F-TR, F-Open, High Power or any other discipline. It is a very versatile platform. With a .473 bolt face you can re-barrel and go to many calibers:
1. 6mm XC 2. 6mm SLR 3. 6mmBR 4. 6 x 284 Winchester 5. 22-250 Remington 6. 257 Roberts 7. 6mm Competition Match
8. .243 Winchester 9. .243 Ackley Improved 10. 6.5mm BR Remington 11. 6.5 x 284 Winchester 12. 6.5x47 Lapua
13. 6.5 Creedmoor 14. 25-06 Remington 15. 225 Winchester 16. 260 Remington 17. 270 Winchester 18. .280 Ackley Improved
19. 220 Swift 20. .280 Remington 21. .284 Winchester 22. 7mm BR Remington 23. 7mm-08 Remington 24. 7.57 Mauser 25. 30BR Remington
26. 300 Savage 27. 308 Winchester

I rework my own bolts to where they don't pull foward on closing. Most of the decocking is from the cam over when closing. When closing the bolt you will feel a hard spot on closing.
Remington type actions have a similar feel but they cock on closing. Savage cock's on opening .When that happens with a savage it lets the sear lock up change enough for the trigger not to lock. If push the bolt handle foward and cam it down slowly much of the de cocking is gone.
Mine I have made the bolt closing as smooth as any custom action. Bolt lift is another issue that I have helped also. The bolt that Dave kiff makes I asume addresses both problems.
For those with savage guns try putting the bolt foward and slow move the bolt down. Holding foward.
I'm sure their is someone here that does savage bolts.
I got to shoot a savage tatcial gun the bolt didn't pull foward. Larry

Best economical rifle for 1000 yards ?

The one you have now...

If 300 WinMag bites too hard, use a reduced loading.

What you have will work very well ... and nothing is more economical than using what's already available and suitable for the job.
It won't make you popular with the shooters on either side of you on the firing line but if you have the courage to withstand the criticism and need something to lessen the recoil a muzzle brake on that 300 will calm it down.
If it's a very accurate soft spoken rifle you're after I'd recommend looking at a 6BR Norma with a heavy plus or minus 27 inch barrel.

1st lesson in 1000 yard BR competition........ disregard the above statement. Don't worry about what the neighbors think, and don't let them crawl around in your head. As long as you follow the rules you are GTG.
