Adjustable gas block and ladder testing

I'm new to reloading. Please be patient. I built a 16" .223 on a 1:8 barrel with an adjustable gas block. how should I set the gas block for ladder testing? I am seeing there being more pressure running back against the bolt the higher the powder charge. In theory I want the bolt to come back just hard enough to reliably lock but no more. I appreciate everyone's input and help in this.

Right now this rifle shoots just under one MOA with Hornady precision 75 gr ammo. My goal is to try to get it at a half MOA with Barnes TSX 70 GR.

The basics are that you want some more margin than just barely locking back.

Check to see the angle in clock terms. 2 to 4 O'Clock isn't going to over stress the gun or the brass in typical situations.

Unless there is something I am missing, the gas block shouldn't affect the ladder at all. The bullet is gone by the time gas initiates the cycle.
