actions

I am wanting to build a new rifle chambered in 30BR. I built a Rem. XP100 in 30BR and love it.
I have been thinking for my first total build from manufactured parts, that I would start with a Pierce Rem. 700 style action, for simplicity of getting a stock fit). Has anyone used and have any comments on one of these actions?
My line of thinking goes like this. Rem. 700 style action, Lilja 26" barrel 1-17" twist chambered in 30BR short throat for 125 to 150 gr. bullets, and Tack Driver thumbhole stock by Richard's Microfit Stocks. Comments?

What kind of shooting you are going to do depends what kind of stock you use, choose carefully. Benchrest shooters usually don't hold on to the stock they just let recoil touch the shoulder . There are many other barrel makers out there other then Lilja.

I want a gun that I can carry, maybe hunt deer with, shoot long range yotes from prone or using bypod/tripod shooting sticks and off my portable bench/trailer for sage rats.
We don't have a bench rest club near where I live and the long range rifle club is more into the military rifle competition etc.
I shoot IHMSA out to 500 meters with my XP100 but typically we shoot 200 yards/meters. Was wanting to build a versitiel rifle comparable to my XP.

Hi lewellan2,
The stock you choose for multipurpose shooting is really a matter personal choice. The Tac-Driver sounds like a good choice to me; considering the information given.

I have had several stock from Richard's Microfit and all have turned out beautifully. However, be forewarned before buying from Richard's Microfit. Richard's Microfit produce stocks in mass numbers. Quality control is spotty at best. From the view point of the average person these stock come rough, are not 99% press fit or 96% semi let-in. Tips, caps, vents and action let ins are not necessarily 100% aligned and delivery time can be several months. These stocks are for the professional gunsmith and hobbiest.

I love working with wood. I have the patients to wait several months for delivery,if need be). I do all my own stock work, less pad installation) I start shaping with a file. Then I start letting in the barreled action and move to 180 grit sand paper. Then I bed the barreled action. After that I move through 220,320,400 and finally 600grit sand paper. Then stain the stock. Then seal the stock with shellac. Then hit the stock with 400 and 600 grit sand paper again. Then start the finishing process. The whole thing can take a month or two to finish a stock start to finish, working several week nights per week and one good week end)

If you're up to all the work Richard's Microfit is a fine product, if not look to Boyd's or the like. If you have a gunsmith that will do the stock work for you, check first before dropping a Richard's Microfit stock in his lap. Most gunsmiths are very loyal and have there own stock supplier.

In short, it's all about perception and a finished rifle stock can be a very personal thing.

I am good with wood, used to build custom furniture etc. Do wood carving as a hobby. Am willing to wait for the stock and have a friend who is a gunsmith who will help me along the way to getting it fitted and bedded properly etc.
Learned a long time ago, "qaulity takes time and is worth the wait".
