Action & Trigger timing

Can someone explain action and trigger timing? The what, when, why and how to fix an action that is in need of help.

Hal

A tighter fitting bolt is not the cure all.

It all comes down to a few angles & making them work in unison.

I've been doing it long before there were You Tube Video's.

I have a rifle with a Colt Light Rifle action( a NULA copy).

After the rifle has been fired, and when the bolt handle is raised the firing pin is cammed .220 rearward. When the bolt handle is slid foreward and down, the trigger sear catches the cocking piece, compressing the firing pin spring .030 more.

Does this sound about right or can the timming be changed and the action be made smoother?

I'll have to check some of my other actions now.

Hal

I am not familiar with that action. What you have is pretty standard for an un timed action. When set up right you will cam .250+ on open and .000 on close.
This is not to say there is anything wrong with your setup. I just appreciate the feel and minimal bag upset of a timed action.

Hal,
Was your Colt/Ultra Light Arms rifle a recall percipient?
I've held the Colt 30-06 & 300WM's chamberings that were.

Your Colt is TIMED "middle of the road" between primary extraction & battery as most actions are.
The firing pin travel as noted is .220"
The firing pin to sear "Hand Off"is .030",common for production actions.
Some pin timing is 2X what your Colt is currently.
Do they go bang-yes.
Are they correct-no.

Is the issue repairable-yes.
The bolt handle will require removal, located fwd, timed radially for primary extraction & into battery.

A few more measurements is all that's required.
I've conversed w/ Al Warner & Jim Borden in regards to bolt/handle/firing pin TIMING decades ago.

Current actions that are timed correctly
Kelbley's
Borden
Barnard
(in no particular order)

Others hit the "middle of the road"

Rocket Science to most !!

Dan and Alex thanks for the reply. This is a great forum to learn on.

Dan

I don't know if the Colt was ever sent in for a recall. Right now it's at Nula getting fitted with one of Melvin's stocks, replacing the factory plastic stock.

The total firing pin fall is .250.

It's not a perfect world.
BAT,Kelbly,Stiller,Phoenix/Defiance,Pierce,Nesika Bay Precision,Wichita,ULA/NULA aren't in my safes for a reason.

Not all custom firing pin cocking cam surfaces are cut like a Borden.
Lots of copy cats, but Jim Borden got it right by his design & it's not his first rodeo.

Barnard P's are my only choice for competition work-reason being the timing, trigger group & craftsmanship is second to NONE.
