Action question for machinist.

I have a Surgeon 591 single shot action. Can it be machined out to make it a repeater? I was told that because of the hardening, cutting the metal would be difficult. However, Defiance hardens the steel prior to machining.

My first call would be to Surgeon rifles. Shoul be no problem for them.

Given the information I have received here and at 2 accomplished custom shops, it is not a good idea to try.

Carbide will cut it like cutting butter.

Their Web Site states that the actions are machined from 4140, but they make no mention of in house heat treating, which leads me to believe they are using commercial heat treat bars. Most of the commercial heat treat bars we get are around 34RC.

So you will have no problems machining it.

They do state that the bolts are rough machined, then heat treated, and finished.

The bolt does not have an ejector. From looking at the bolt the extractor would not be located correctly for an ejector. It is a non issue because someone bought it.

I have the same action. It is readily drillable, machinable, and can be tapped. All with standard HSS so long as you adhere to reliable feeds and speeds for high carbon steel in or around vicinity of 35-40 RC. That was an estimated hardness on my part, and everything went well.
