Action Puller For Removing Actions During Bedding

I have been working on making some action pullers for removing rifle actions during epoxy/glass bedding and i thought i would share! Most professional gunsmiths i have talked with have made their own version of this for their own use but i was unable to find anything commercially available. I made a design in CAD and got some input from some full-time gunsmiths and got my material ordered. Today i got the first prototype made. The bolt that pulls up on the c bracket will be a grade 8 flanged hex head bolt instead of the square one pictured. Im not 100% sure on price yet but it will definitely be under $150, likely around $100 or so. This tool allows for the action to be pulled straight up out of the bedding to prevent any damage or chipping to the epoxy because of rocking when pryed out normally. Also, it should make removing actions that are a little stuck much easier. I will do some testing soon. Let me know what you think!18723167_1381429038569795_4408924361889677312_n.jpg 18809212_169381863596434_7541717019905753088_n.jpg 18878927_1700860033547367_6020037332730642432_n.jpg 18809343_1071214656343298_8794422529037959168_n.jpg 18889305_852640278225474_4307943491712843776_n.jpg

I'm not a smith, but I do pull the action out of bedding occasionally. I would make the sides a bit more adjustable for width maybe have a slot on both ends. I would think that 2 Allan head bold on each end of the side pieces would be sufficient to handle any pulling force

Just my $.02

Make your sides shorter and drill and tap the rod that slide into the action. Pull directly on the rod.

Check out the action pulling jig, Chad made on Long rifles Inc.

I am worried that with slotted holes someone may not tighten the screws tight enough and the side would split out during use and damage a nice stock so they will remain holes. There is plenty of adjustment the way it is.

The problem with threading the rod is if someone has an action that isnt open on the top and wouldnt allow the bolt to thread into the rod. I am trying to keep this tool as modular as possible. I have talked with Chad about this design a bit and he has given me some pointers.

IMHO, if it takes a "puller" to remove the action from a just bedded stock, you're doing something wrong. :eek:Maybe not enough mold release??
With the barrel installed in the action, while holding the stock, a good RAP on the barrel should brake it loose, if you did the job right.;)

I've only done maybe 12 or so stock bedding jobs so maybe I'am missing something?

Pullers pull straight up. Any other way your pulling at a angle.

I have always taken 4-6" bolts removed the heads. Inserted them through the pillars out the bottom of the stock. I wax them so they will release. I use a large Wood stock clamp to bottom the action into the bedding to get the action riding metal to metal on the pillars. Allow it to dry and harden overnight. Then remove the clamp and bump the protruding bolts with a rubber mallet. You may have to wack the barrel to keep it in alignment as it leaves the bedding.

I agree with Pat's suggestion.
Though I read that you stated there is plenty of adjustment as is, I assume the staggered rows down the sides provide the adjustment range? I have no idea the variety of widths to be "conquered", but I would think it's wide.

The adjustability to fit over a variety of receivers (of differing widths) would also prevent damage to the top edge of a stock due to poor fit.

Looks interesting.

The rows are spaced 1/8" from the each other, using the inner two rows gives you a spacing of 1.475", the outer two rows give you 1.725". You could also us a combination of rows to ultimately give you spacing in 1/8" increments.
