Action for Vartarg

Would a 20 Vartarg be more suitable on a Remington model 7 or 700 Action or something else? thanks

For all intensive purposes, I don't think the cartridge will know the difference and as long as they both have the correct follower for the 221 size case, either should work equally well. For me, the one big advantage to using a Model 700 over the Model 7, would be there will likely be a lot more stock options available for anything built using a SA Rem 700 action.

All I can say is that Mark you will love the 20VT!
Go custom and then you will really be in love.I guess it depends on your use, will you carry it as a walking/calling rifle or a dedicated colony varmint rig?A model Seven would be sweet for called in varmints or a nice BAT SV would be awesome for a bench rig.Enjoy your build, keep us up to date on your project ;)
Matt

I have them on both, use the mag box that has the block out in the back and no feeding issues. My 700 ejects just fine, but if your concerned have a sako extractor installed in a 700.

I built my 20 vartarg on a Kelbly/Stolle Atlas single shot action. I LOVE it. When I get the stock back from being painted I will post some pictures. I went with a McMillan A3 (wasn't my first choice but McMillan had one on the specials page inletted for this action) and it has really grown on me. I used a Hart No. 5 taper 1-12 twist for a barrel.

I shoot mine as single shots so not concerned with feeding issues, just taking good care of my brass. The two that I would rank highest are unfortunately not really available, but anyway....
My first choice is a Dakota Predator/Varminter; I don't think there has been an action made that is more perfect for the little 223 or Fireball based cartridges. Second is the Nesika BR action which is not made anymore as far as I know. Next would be a Sako short action; you can probably find one of these as a repeater or single shot with a little looking around and some patience. Other than those, the rest are pretty much Rem 700 clones one way or another, and they are great actions, just not tailored to the small cartridges.

I had my 17 Mach IV and 221 fireball built back in 2004 on Remington SA. You will need 221 fireball follower if plan on factory BDL platform. I use a single shot follower on both of mine for prairie dog hunting. Fun little rifles.

Mine was put together on a Howa short action Re-barreled/re-chambered to 20 SCC and then put into a Boyd's stock. It will feed two rounds out of the magazine fine, but if I try 3-4 then it is a no go. I mostly just load single shot, dropping onto the top of the magazine follower anyway, in the pivot fields, so that works just fine.

A friend has a 20 VT on a Sako A1 action. It's a repeater with McMillan stock. Very nice rig. If you want a repeater, this one is hard to beat.

And I have one on a Rem XR 100 action. I bought an XR 100 in 223, replaced the barrel with a 20 cal and added a sako extractor. Works well and is very accurate. This one is a single shot.

If you want a petite carry rifle, use a CZ 527 that was a .221 Fireball to begin with. Will feed fine from magazine and mine is wonderfully accurate. If you want a bench gun then use a solid bottom single shot in either Sako, Remington XR 100 or custom.
