Action and pillar bedding questions

So I’ve got a new laminate stock coming for my rifle and plan on pillar and action bedding. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube where they bed the pillars and the action separate, which is what I would have done without any other direction. However I came across this article on 6mmbr where he bedded both the pillars and action at the same time. https://www.6mmbr.com/pillarbedding.html
Trying to decide on which way to go. For those that have done it separate, do you torque your action to the full 40-50 in-lb. Seems to me full torque would be best.

Also looking for a source for stainless pillars. Most are aluminum, but I would prefer stainless.

I have done it both ways and now always do them together. Wrap tape around the screws to center them in the pillars. Aluminum pillars work fine. You will probably need to make your own stainless ones.

Thanks. My thoughts on stainless came about after looking at the aluminum bedding block on the accustock. It’s beat to death and gouged out at the bottom. So I was looking for something more durable. Granted the epoxy bedding around the recoil lug should stop any significant stress from being transferred to the pillars. But…

I always do mine separate. Pillars and recoil lug first, then the action later.

Chad Dixon at LRI has nice stainless pillars as well. Very similar to the grizzlys above.

You can get good results either method. New stocks I bed pillars and action at same time. Rebedding, I leave the pillars in.

I don’t put much torque on the screws, I tighten wing nuts by hand, again not very tight. Balance the weight distribution by wrapping tape around the barrel so it rests on the stock barrel channel.

Don’t be afraid of it, if you don’t like the result, redo it.

This is great advice. OP why stainless? Aluminum will work find and if you ever needed to cut them down a bit or bore them out, aluminum cuts a lot easier than stainless.

I do them both at the same time. Torque to specs. 40 to 50 inch pounds. Tommy Mc
