Action and Bolt Coating

I am currently re-barreling my Sako 75 I have the barrel already.

But I am considering having the action Dura coated for protection against the elements.

Do any of you have experience of the protection Duracoat gives it is a blued action that is now prone to showing rust spots if not immediately wiped down after getting wet. Will Duracoat give more protection than re-blueing?

I am also thinking of having the Bolt fluted and then coated with some kind of protective coating to cover the blemishes of use. I was looking at having the bolt coated with TiALN but after speaking to the coating company they have recommended using a Graphit-iC coating.

I know it would be a lot simpler to use a stainless action but the Rifle holds great sentimental value so that option is out.

Advice and experiance of all of the above would be greatly welcomed.

TIA

I'd investigate the thermal aspects of coatings before coating the bolt. The higher temperatures used in some of the VDP coatings may affect the bolt in ways that would leave it's integrity questionable.
I got this from listening to an action maker discuss the subject.

Thanks you are the 2nd person to say about the high temp involved in the coating method.

Have any of you used QPQ, Melonite or other salt bath Nitriding or know how the stiller Tac actions are 'Blacked'?

Sorry to chime in but a place that offers these services would also be nice to know! I'm in the same boat. Later,

I have limited experince with baked on coatings at home,KG gun kote and parkerizing zinc and mang). While I have not used Duracoat its like an epoxy and is thicker than Gun Kote. Gun Kote seems to hold up better than Durcacoat, assuming you prep the surface, I think fresh parkerizing works better than the k-phos treatment KG sells but others claim the k-phos is great). Duracoat comes in many colors and works better on stocks but Gun Kote seems to be a better metal finish.

Go to www.riflestockpainting.com Charlie is too cheap and does a wonderful job.

Charlie did both the stock and metal and I think both were in the $200 area. He has a quick turnaround also.
