Acheiving High velocities with a 308 and 130 grain Barnes TX

Has anyone experimented with the 308 and 130 grain Barnes TX or TTX. Using stout loads of W748, Tac, 8208BR, or another powder? I am speaking of reaching accuraccy nodes in the 3200-3300 fps range.

Nat,
I've played with 130 gr TSX & TTSX a lot in 30 cal stuff. I don't shoot a 308 BUT I had no problem running 3400 fps in the 30-06 with Varget. I use RL-17 on my 300 WSM's @3650 & Varget @3400 in the 06. I checked the web site & they list the top varget load at a little over 3100 for the 308 BUT they also list the top load for the 06 at 3200 which is very low SOO you might get what you're looking for. Nosler claimed the 06 Varget load to be 3400 & that's exactly what I get. You will like them, word of caution, you will want to shoot deer again as the nerve endings go absolutely nuts. They don't need the 2nd one, just keep them covered.

Nat,
I did some testing with the Barnes 130 TTSX but I only have a 20 inch tube on my Rem SPS Tactical. I used 51 grs. of H4895 with CCI BR2 primers, seated to 2.810 OAL and got 3180 FPS. 50.5 grs was my best grouping load with 3 shots in 1 inch at 300 yds. and I still need to shoot some more to fine tune it.

Here is some more info on the testing I did.

Not with a TSX, but just for reference,

In my first Hunter gun, I ran a 308 with 135 Chisms, and the accuracy in a 24" Hart was at 3125 with N 201.

I'd think 3300 would be a bit optimistic with 130's......

I've never made it that high (3200) without the primers falling out (125gr bullets) and severe bolt lift.

I have shot 150 Nosler Accubonds and Swift Sciroccos, LC 81 match brass, with Fed 215 primers and 51.5 gr W748 and gotten 3,019 fps out of a 20" barrel. This is not a load I would reccomend starting with.

Was hoping to get info for the 130 grain Barnes.

Holy Cow Nat! I have to ask, How my reloads are you getting on those cases! :o I'm only getting 2765 fps out of my 20" with 150 gr. Sierra's and a bunch of Varget! Sure your not talkin' about a .308 Norma Magnum? ;D

You can't get enough Varget in the case to exceed 2900 fps with a 20 inch barrel. You will have to find a very dense powder or load a duplex load which would never recomend. The kind of loads I am talking about have to be worked up to as pressures are close to excessive. The Hornaady light magnums in 308 boast of 3000 fps. All reloading books are on the conservative side because of liability. There are several loading books out that are based of computer programs and not actually shooting.
