Achedemic 22 WMR vs 17 HMR accuracy quesion.

I have read over and over that the 17 magnum rimfire is more accurate that its .22 counterpart.

I am trying to get a good understanding on factors of accuracy. What makes one cartridge more accurate than an another if the guns are identical.

What is it about the .17 that makes it more mechanically accurate?

I think that it's mainly due to the ammo makers using higher quality bullets in the 17's. I have done some 22mag bullet swapping and there are gains to be realized just from using better bullets.

ah,

So if the manufacturers can be convinced to use the same quality of bullets in the .22s as the 17s the claim that the 17 is more accurage should vanish.

Thanks guys.

.22 mag ammo is junk i havent found any that gave constant group size or decent es,most ammo has es over 100fps), now that the hmr has become so popular good ammo probably will never be produced for the 22 mag

Is there also a difference in the way the chamber is cut? I have seen an article or two criticizing the way a 22 magnum chamber is cut but I do not know if the 17 rimfires are different.

fis off, the 17 is a precision made bullet, has to be very carefully made, to do it's job. Secondly, the primer compound, in the 17's, are also more carefully made, mixed and layed into the case, as opposed to the 22 mag.
