Accuracy to be competitive at 600 yds?

Just re barreled my old short range BR rifle with a new Rock Creek, 8 twist, chambered for 6X47 Lapua. I would one day like to attend a 600 yard match. My question is what is acceptable accuracy, to be competitive. Today I was shooting at 300 yds. and I fired three, five shot groups with a load that showed a lot of promise at 100yds. The conditions were difficult but the groups agged out at .830 Is this in the ball park or do I still have a lot of work to do?

Chuck, I don't know much about Benchrest, but if you can find a Highpower F-Class match in your area I guarantee the rifle is competitive and you'll have a ball. I'm assuming you have at least 95 gr. bullets, 105 better.

Chuck, I have never experienced difficult conditions at the Bear Swamp range...unless those turkeys parading in front of you all day long are distracting.:)

Lamar, the only turkey that was distracting was the one sitting on the bench next to me saying ooooh were did that one go! You know the conditions got real nice as soon as we started taking the wind flags down, how does that always happen?

It happens enough times that we may have to put in a tunnel...
but the good news is there may be stimulus money available
I am perplexed though, I always shot hole for hole all day long at that range:rolleyes:

Chuckhunter,

At Peidmont gun club in NC & Oak Ridge, TN IBS 600 benchrest, on a good weather day, it will take a 2.0' or better 4 target agg to win group and mid 190's to win score. I think a record HG group agg 1.4' was set this year. Score HG record was set a few weeks ago 197. Look up match results on IBS website, you will see what is winning at al IBS matches.

At our club in Ojai, things have tightened up over the last couple of years. Most decent guns are capable of 3' at 600 yards. The better guns are going sub-2' in good conditions with vertical approaching 1'. The guns with tight vertical are 6BRs, BRX, 6-6.5x47, 6.5x47, .308 Win.
